The McClelland Gallery+Sculpture Park is the Peninsula’s first and largest outdoor art gallery with giant objects stretching out toward the sky like our silver gnome here. Some years ago, I established the Dame Elizabeth Murdoch walk; a fundraising initiative to keep the gallery afloat. This initiative enabled me plenty of time to learn the narrative of sculpture and the history of McClelland.. it’s what makes the Plunge such a unique wine tour.

For many years Nat White (who passed away this week) was the torch bearer in the close community of Mornington Peninsula winemakers. His Acre and Half-Acre Pinot Noir were amongst the most prestigious wines of this variety in Australia. Almost exclusively sold from the Main Ridge Estate cellar door, the Half Acre was rated “Outstanding” in the prestigious Langton’s Classification of Australian Wine. Nat (who, with his wife Rosalie, established their vineyard in 1975) loved French culture, and French wines. He was a humble man but was this region’s equivalent to one of the giants of Burgundy. His wines were always distinguished by finesse and perfumed grace. A wise and kind man will be deeply missed.

The Tri-Nation Challenge was a competition between Australian, New Zealand and South African wines with many outstanding Chardonnays competing for the ultimate trophy. Today’s guests were South African and had a deep appreciation of the Chardonnay produced in the land of the Springboks. During their tour they were seduced by flavours and treated to some of the Mornington Peninsula’s absolute finest. They couldn’t be anything but impressed.
