Our last day today & we visited Solvang, the Danish capital of America on our way back to LA. We drove the coast road through Malibu & saw some of the devastation left behind by the 2025 Palisades fires, sad to see.

Our final National parks for this trip - Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks.

A lot of trees, giant trees which are spectacular.

And … we got to see black bears in the wild! A mama bear & her two baby cubs crossed the road in front of us & headed into the forest. Photos from a video, so not the greatest as it all happened so quickly.

We finally made it to Yosemite National Park today. We tried to get here 3 years ago but there was too much snow around at end of March & roads were closed.

Today, we had perfect weather, around 23 Celsius. There are a couple of roads still closed but most of the main sights were accessible.

Stunning scenery all day, it certainly lived up to its reputation.

After driving to Dallas, Texas, where we spent the weekend with catching up with family, we flew back to Los Angeles.

We picked up another rental car & spent the afternoon driving to Death Valley & explored more the next day.

We saw extreme desert landscapes, including salt flats (Badwater Basin), sand dunes, and amazingly colourful canyons.

Sunrises and sunsets along with full sun, showed huge changes in the rock colours.

So many extremes and stunning scenery wherever you look.

We have made our way to Kansas where we stayed in Paola enjoying the hospitality of friends Marla Biggs and Brian.

We did a day trip to the Kansas State Capital Topeka and I got to meet one of the senators and we saw the State Governor give a speech. This was such a beautiful building.

Another day another state, this time we headed into Iowa.

Very pretty countryside as we meandered through smaller roads avoiding the Interstate roads where we could.

Today we visited Minneapolis, Minnesota's largest city, located on the Mississippi River. It forms the "Twin Cities" metropolitan area with the state capital, Saint Paul. The city was really nice to wander around starting at Stone Arch Bridge with a pedestrian/cycle track taking in both sides of the river.

The State Capitol building was very impressive inside and out.

We also went out to see Prince's Paisley Park (it was closed today) but we did see the Prince4Ever Tribute Fence, where fans leave flowers, messages, and artwork and the Riley Creek Tribute Tunnel.

We then drove through lots of quaint towns & pretty farm land into Iowa.

Yes, it was another big driving day today with lots of farmland scenery & quaint towns as we made our way to Lake Itasca, Minnesota to see where the Mississippi River starts.

There is a lovely driving circuit through the State Park with plenty of lake views.

Another driving day today, leaving Wyoming & travelling through South Dakota ending in Bismarck, North Dakota.

We visited Belle Fourche “The Center of the Nation” the geographic center of the USA.

We stopped off to see Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park in Mandan, North Dakota with the Custer House & Mandan Native American "On-a-Slant Village" with reconstructed earthlodges. 

We also visited the Scientific Center of North America, not far from the town of Center.

Today was a full day of driving leaving Colorado & heading into Wyoming.

We stopped off in Rawlins, Wyoming for a coffee in a cute cafe (loved the coffee bean bag decor) and then at Martin's Cove in Carbon County, Wyoming.

This is a historic site commemorating the 1856 rescue of the stranded Martin and Willie Handcart Companies, a tragic event where pioneers faced starvation and exposure during their trek to Utah.

The site is located on the Mormon Trail, where it converged with the California, Oregon, and Pony Express Trails.

Having recently watched the 1883 series (a Yellowstone prequel) where they cover
parts of the same trails used by Mormon handcart companies, including the Oregon Trail and routes through Wyoming - it really brought that history all together. The hardships so many of these brave pioneers endured to give themselves and their families a better life, was truly a remarkable feat.
