Bulgaria & Bulgarian Golf Tours getting popular on the European golf map.
We spoke with Boris Borissov, co-founder and managing partner of the award-winning Bulgaria Golf Tours, to learn more about why Bulgaria deserves a spot on every golfer’s bucket list.
For many British golfers, Bulgaria is still a mystery. While its Black Sea coast has long been a favourite for summer beach holidays and its luxurious mountain resorts attract winter ski enthusiasts, golf has remained under the radar.
But that’s changing fast. The past two decades have seen Bulgaria quietly build a reputation as an emerging golf destination. It’s an offering based on world-class courses designed by legends such as nine-time major champion Gary Player and former Masters winner and 2006 Ryder Cup captain Ian Woosnam. Then, of course, there’s the stunning landscapes and exceptional hospitality.
The country’s golfing journey began in 2000 with its first course near the capital Sofia. By 2008, three championship courses opened – two along the beautiful Black Sea coast and one around Sofia – creating Bulgaria’s first true golf destination.
In 2013, the Thracian Cliffs Golf Club hosted the prestigious Volvo World Match Play Championship, putting Bulgaria firmly on the golfing map.
