Neophron Tours Birdwatching, natural history, wildlife and bird photography tours and holidays in Bulgaria and the Balkans: http://neophrontours.bg

Neophron Tours is one of the major tour operators in Bulgaria for foreign travelers who come for specialized wildlife holidays. Run by experts with long experience in this type of tours, the company has built up a reputation for the quality of services offered. Everywhere we go, we always try to support the local service providers and promote environment friendly tourism, believing that this will

greatly contribute to improving the life of local people and will raise their awareness to wildlife and nature conservation. One of our ultimate goals has always been to raise funds to help wildlife conservation in the different areas we visit during our tours in Bulgaria. Thanks to funds generated through our tours and the support of our tour participants, we recently launched a special Wildlife Conservation Fund to help conserve the national populations of a number of rare and endangered species of birds, such as the breeding Egyptian Vulture and Griffon Vulture in the Eastern Rhodopes, the Eastern Imperial Eagle in the Sakar Hills, the Semi-collared Flycatcher in the oak forests of the Eastern Balkan Range, the wintering Red-breasted Goose in the Coastal Dobroudzha and many others. We also help local Bulgarian NGOs, and the Wildllife Conservation Society in particular, in their crucial work for preservation of different biodiversity rich areas in Bulgaria and saving those areas from deterioration. Under WCS proposals several new protected areas have been declared and
many others have been saved from destruction. By simply joining one of our tours, you will certainly contribute to our conservation efforts, as much of our Wildlife Conservation Fund is generated through them. This is the reason for us to say that Neophron Tours is the logical choice for anyone who favors responsible travel and loves nature and wildlife. Neophron Tours holds tour-operating certificate PK-01-7186, issued by the Bulgarian Government.

The complete TRIP REPORT from the Neophron Tours Birding Tour to OMAN in November 2025 is now ready. The report follows the itinerary day by day and includes a detailed account of the sites visited with eBird checklists, key species observed, and many memorable moments from the field. Based in the Dhofar region around Salalah, the tour explored a remarkable variety of habitats, and over the course of ten days, the group recorded an impressive 201 bird species.
The tour was led by Gigov and Petrov, whose in-depth knowledge of Omani birds, careful site selection, and flexible daily planning ensured consistently high-quality birding throughout the trip.
Beyond birds, the group also enjoyed encounters with reptiles, amphibians, butterflies, dragonflies, and mammals, further enriching an already outstanding natural history experience.

January here in the south-east of Europe has been all about colour and brightness. Crisp winter light, skies full of movement, and birds very much in action. From quiet moments in nature to bursts of energy in the field, it’s been a joy to watch and photograph birdlife at its best. Even better has been sharing these days with happy birders and passionate wildlife photographers, all drawn together by the same excitement and wonder. A beautiful start to the year indeed!

News from the field: the cold spell and strong north-easterly winds of the last couple of days have brought the first large flocks of wintering Red-breasted and Greater White-fronted geese to their wintering grounds in the coastal area of Dobroudzha in Bulgaria. There are currently about 1,000 Red-breasted geese and 5,000 Greater White-fronted geese, as well as other interesting species of waterfowl, gulls and birds of prey. Hopefully more will join them and they will stay for a while, so that we can all enjoy them!

With soft light, calm waters and reliable encounters, Lake Kerkini is a dream location for photographers seeking powerful images of one of the world’s largest flying birds, the Dalmatian Pelicans.

The dramatic, ever-changing weather this January creates unique moods—from soft fog and golden light to snow-dusted landscapes, while our carefully planned boat trips bring you close to these magnificent birds, allowing for striking, eye-level images.

Yes, this is the time of year when the majestic Dalmatian pelicans look their best, with their curly hairdos and bright red pouches on full display. Here are some photos from our first winter photography tour in Bulgaria and Greece this year. We have several more photo tours planned by the end of February 2026, and there are still a couple of free spots on one of them. If you're interested, please drop us a line.

Lilford’s White-backed Woodpecker (Dendrocopos leucotos lilfordi)

In spite of being the most rare woodpecker species here in Bulgaria, the Lilfiord’s Woodpecker occurs in the old broadleaf forests in the Balkans and comes down to the mountain foothills to feed in winter. Yet, this repeated encounter was quite a surprise, and a wonderful start of the new year!

No birding trip to Salalah is complete without a pelagic from the port of Mirbat. We took two during our recent small group tour to the south of Oman, and were more than happy to see Brown Noddy, Flesh-footed Shearwater, Persian Shearwater, Jouanin's Petrel, Wilson's Storm Petrel, Swinhoe's Storm Petrel, Masked B***y, Bridled Tern and many of the more regular sea birds! It was a spectacle to enjoy and remember and we hope to be back soon!
Our 2026 Oman Birding Tour dates are already on our website.

It's a wrap! Our Oman Birding Tour ended a couple of days ago, with 203 bird species observed in just 10 days in the south of Oman. Here is an eBird trip report by our expert guide, Gigov, who spent two more days exploring the area and added four more species to the list.: https://ebird.org/tripreport/428724
This tour was such a success that you will be hearing more about it over the next few weeks or months – sorry, but we can't help it !😊

Our preliminary dates for 2026 are already on our website. Please bear in mind that we are considering extending the tour to include the north of Oman, either at the beginning or the end.
