The Mating Process
A pair mates every 15 to 30 minutes, repeating the act up to 20 to 100 times a day for about 4 to 5 days.Each individual mating act is very brief, lasting only about 15 to 20 seconds.The couple often isolates themselves from the rest of the pride and rarely eats during this multi-day period.The interaction can look aggressive or painful. Both lions often snarl, show their teeth, or growl. The male may bite the female’s neck at the end of the act to hold her in place, and the lioness may swat or turn on the male afterward. many other mammals, a lioness does not ovulate automatically. The physical stimulation of frequent mating triggers ovulation to ensure
successful fertilization during her short 3-to-4-day fertile window..
