REMEMBERING LARRY SCHEERS
Larry Scheers helped me with several of my early bison camps, but first and foremost, Larry was a moose hunter through and through, with a nose to match.
I don’t know what it was about that guy, but they say he could call a moose like nobody else. I hunted moose with him a couple of times, and eventually I took him along on a bison hunt during my early days of guiding.
Larry was the first guy to ever shoot a bison with me. He and I each shot a bull on that hunt, and he later became part of the team that helped me get some of those early bison camps going.
Larry was always the first guy to volunteer to head back to camp for supplies and the last guy to touch a knife when something needed gutting. He had lots of stories, a loud voice and a way of making sure you always knew he was around. But he was always game and good to go.
It was guys like Larry who we learned from back in those days. They taught us how to get things done, how to work through tough conditions and how to be successful in the bush.
I was just a kid back then, doing the heavy lifting and hoping one day to become a guide and outfitter. I’ll always be grateful that guys like Larry were there to help me, encourage me and be part of those early years.
I’m sad to say that Larry passed away not long ago. Looking at this picture brings back a lot of good memories, but it also makes me realize how quickly the years have gone by.
Rest easy, Larry. I’m glad we got to share those hunts.
