Our re-branding journey: "Why the Heron?"

We are ever grateful for Don and Deb Critchley’s vision in founding Cottage Care Rentals. Over the past 12 years, their dream has grown into a Mother-Daughter, women-owned entrepreneurial venture—one grounded in the belief that vacationing should not only bring families together but also foster a deeper connection to nature.

Our mission has always been twofold: to create meaningful, memory-making vacation experiences for families from across Canada, and to advocate for the preservation of the Haliburton Highlands' lakes, rivers, streams, and forests—our most precious natural assets.

2025 was meant to be a banner year for Cottage Care. Growth, expansion, and a fresh new vision were on the horizon. Though our path began with a few unexpected hurdles, we remain undeterred—and resilient. Challenges faced. Challenges overcome.

So, why the heron?
The heron is a majestic creature—patient, stoic, deeply connected to the water. You might spot one at the edge of a marsh, knee-deep in stillness, watching. If you’re lucky—and still—you may even witness one strike for dinner. For us, the heron embodies the quiet strength and natural grace we aspire to reflect in our brand.
While the loon is beloved and iconic, we felt the heron deserved its rightful place—a symbol of simple power and ecological harmony. It speaks to our vision of stewardship, of protecting the water and wildlife that make this region magical—and sharing that vision with our owners and guests.
