Important Update for Families Travelling to Mexico!!🇲🇽
Mexico may move forward with new legislation that could change hotel check-in requirements for families travelling with children under 18.
The proposed law is designed to help prevent child trafficking and exploitation by requiring hotels and other tourist accommodations to verify the relationship between minors and the adults accompanying them.
If implemented, parents, guardians and other adults travelling with children may be required to provide additional documentation when checking into accommodations anywhere in Mexico.
The legislation was approved by Mexico’s Senate on October 7, 2026, however, an official implementation date has not been released, so until the official requirements are clarified, I recommend travelling with the following documents as a precaution:
* Birth certificates: Preferably long-form copies showing the names of the child’s parents.
* Custody or guardianship documents: If applicable, bring copies of relevant legal paperwork.
* Parental consent letters: Particularly important when children are travelling with grandparents, relatives, family friends or without one or both parents. A notarized letter may be worth considering.
**Please note: These are recommendations, not a confirmed list of documents that will be required under the new legislation. Details regarding acceptable documentation, copies, notarization and translations have not yet released.
