Cuba update!!

🚨TRAVEL NEWS 🚨
The Cuban government says international airlines will no longer be able to refuel in the country because of fuel shortages. Canadian airlines like Sunwing, WestJet, Air Canada and Transat offering customers the opportunity to change or cancel their bookings without change fees – some will offer travel vouchers while others will offer refunds.

If you are scheduled to travel to Cuba between today and February 25, 2026 and booked with Uniglobe Carefree Travel we will be reaching out to you to go over your options. Otherwise please reach out to your travel agent or the airline you booked with.

Update for travel to Cuba

🚨 TRAVEL NEWS: Cuba Advisory Update (Canada) 🇨🇦🇨🇺
The Government of Canada has updated its travel advice for Cuba. Travellers are now being advised to exercise a high degree of caution due to worsening shortages of electricity, fuel, and basic necessities such as food, water, and medicine — and these shortages can also impact resorts. The situation remains unpredictable and could worsen quickly, potentially affecting services and even flight availability on short notice.

⚡ Power Outages
Cuba is currently experiencing long scheduled daily power cuts, and there have also been unexpected nationwide outages lasting more than 24 hours.
While many larger resorts use generators, fuel shortages may limit generator use, which could affect:
• lighting and air conditioning
• running water and hot water
• food service
• resort activities and utilities

🛒 Shortages of Basic Supplies
Cuba continues to face severe shortages of essentials, including:
• food and bottled water
• public water supply
• medication
• fuel
• currency
These shortages can affect resorts, but the impacts vary and are difficult to predict. Fuel shortages are also making transportation across the island extremely challenging, with disruptions to taxis, public transit, and long lineups at gas stations.
Food shortages and spoilage can occur due to power outages, even at hotels and restaurants. Water supply interruptions have also been reported in some areas.

📵 Telecommunications
Internet and cell service can be unreliable across Cuba. Canadian cell phones may not work consistently, even in major cities, and internet access can be limited.

✅ What travellers should do
If you’re travelling to Cuba, it’s recommended that you:
• bring essential supplies (toiletries, medications, etc.)
• keep extra water and snacks on hand
• ensure you have a complete emergency kit
• register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service
• have comprehensive travel insurance, including cancellation/interruption coverage
• be prepared to adjust travel plans on short notice
