Protecting the Edge

Seeing a polar bear in the wild is something we’ll never forget.

But understanding what it takes for polar bears and people to coexist in Churchill gave that experience an entirely different meaning.

During our journey, we spent time learning about the delicate balance between conservation and community and the work being done to protect both.

Giving back has always been an important part of our Divine journeys, and in Churchill we were proud to be among the first contributors to a grassroots initiative between Polar Bears International and the Churchill Bear Smart Program.

The focus is education and prevention: reducing human-bear conflict, protecting polar bears and helping keep the Churchill community safe.

One of our travellers perhaps said it best:

For us, meaningful travel isn’t only about seeing extraordinary places.

The Best Part of Coming Home? Reading This.

We’ve been home from Churchill for a few days now, and while the photographs are wonderful, it’s the words from our travellers that have stayed with us.

“We are so glad that we joined this trip. It was unforgettable. We also felt connected to the other travellers after just a couple of days.”

That last sentence means so much to us.

Because when we design a Divine journey, we’re thinking about much more than where we’ll go and what we’ll see.

We’re thinking about the people who will experience it together.

A small group changes the way you travel. Conversations happen naturally. Meals are shared. Someone you didn’t know a few days ago becomes the person you’re laughing beside as you chase the Northern Lights at 11 o’clock at night.

You arrive as travellers.

Somewhere along the way, you become a group.

And sometimes, you come home with new friends.

Thank you to this wonderful group for making Churchill so memorable.

OUR FINAL POSTCARD FROM CHURCHILL
One Last Extraordinary Day

Churchill was not finished with us yet.

Our final day began on the water, kayaking among the belugas.

They surfaced beside us, slipped beneath our kayaks and followed us through the water—playful, curious and completely captivating.

There was laughter. There was wonder. And there were moments when all we could do was stop paddling and take it in.

Later, we had the privilege of spending time with Florence Hamilton, founder of Dene Routes and a proud Sayisi Dene woman.

Florence shared the history of her people, their deep relationship with the land and the importance of the caribou to generations of Dene life. Her stories gave us a deeper, more personal understanding of Churchill and the people who call this place home.

Our final day continued with Polar Bears International, where we learned more about polar bears, the changing Arctic environment and the conservation work being done to protect their future.

And then, somehow, it was time to pack our bags and return to Winnipeg.

We came to Churchill hoping to see belugas, polar bears and the Northern Lights.

We are leaving with all of that—and so much more.

The stories.

The people.

The laughter.

The moments that could never have been planned.

This is why we travel.

Not simply to see a place, but to listen, to learn and to allow it to change us.

Churchill, you were everything we hoped for.

And then some.

POSTCARD FROM CHURCHILL No. 3
Bears, Belugas & Métis Stories

Some days are so full, it is hard to know where to begin.

We started with a fascinating talk from Dylan McCart, Executive Director of the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, who helped us better understand the polar bears, their changing environment and the important research happening here.

Then we set out on our polar bear trek—and found not one, but two bears together along the rocky shoreline of Hudson Bay.

To see them in the wild, moving through this vast landscape, was a moment none of us will soon forget.

From the tundra to the water, our next adventure took us out by Zodiac to meet Churchill’s other famous residents: the belugas.

They swam alongside us, surfaced within arm’s reach and seemed every bit as curious about us as we were about them. There was laughter, excitement and more than a little disbelief at just how close they came.

We ended the day gathered around the table for dinner at Trader’s Table, followed by dessert at the Boreal Lounge and a beautiful evening of Métis storytelling with Katie DeMeuilles.

Wildlife, learning, wonderful food and stories shared generously—another remarkable day in Churchill.

POSTCARD FROM CHURCHILL

From Winnipeg... to the edge of the Arctic.

After our first afternoon together, we spent the evening enjoying a wonderful dinner at Bar Accanto before settling in for the night at the historic Fort Garry Hotel

The next morning, it was time to head north.

Churchill.

We arrived at the Blueberry Inn by Churchill Wild | Polar Bear Walking Safaris our exclusive home for the next few days, where Christine and her team were waiting to welcome us.

Drinks were poured, everyone settled in and Roy Mexted Roy Mexted joined us for an evening of music, stories and plenty of laughter.

It already felt like a pretty wonderful first night in Churchill.

And then someone looked up.

The Northern Lights were out.

Our entire group headed outside and stood together beneath a brilliant green Aurora stretching across the northern sky.

On our very first night.

There are moments in travel you plan for months.

And then there are moments you could never plan at all.

What a welcome, Churchill.

POSTCARD FROM WINNIPEG

And so it begins.

Our Edge of the Arctic travellers have arrived in Winnipeg, where our journey begins at the beautiful Fort Garry Hotel.

Before we head north to Churchill, tonight is about welcoming everyone, settling in and enjoying those first moments together.

Welcome cocktails and mocktails are waiting, a few special goodies for the adventure ahead are ready, and the excitement is beginning to build.

Tomorrow, we head north.

To Churchill. To Hudson Bay. To belugas, polar bears, wide-open landscapes and all the moments we can’t possibly plan for.

For now, we’re simply enjoying the beginning.

We’ll be sharing postcards along the way so you can experience a little of the journey with us.

Greetings from Churchill

Allison has arrived, and tomorrow our Edge of the Arctic journey officially begins.

For now, we’re taking in the little details that make Churchill, Churchill.

The signs. The murals by Sandra Cook Art. The train station. The humour. The unmistakable reminder that we’ve arrived in Polar Bear Country.

At 58°N, 94°W, this small northern town on the edge of Hudson Bay is about to become home base for a very special group of Divine travellers.

Today is about getting everything ready.

Tomorrow, the suitcases arrive, introductions are made and the adventure begins.

We’ll be sharing Postcards from Churchill along the way, so follow along.

We have a feeling there are some wonderful stories ahead.

What If You’re Waiting for Someone to Go With?

We’ve heard it many times over the years.

“I’d love to go... I just don’t have anyone to travel with.”

And we understand. Saying yes to a journey on your own can feel like a very big step.

But something wonderful happens on a small Divine journey.

You may arrive not knowing everyone, but it doesn’t stay that way for long.

Conversations begin over breakfast. Someone takes the seat beside you on the way to the day’s adventure. Stories are shared over dinner. And somewhere along the way, a group of travellers begins to feel like a group of friends.

That’s one of the reasons we keep our journeys small.

This October, we’re travelling to Vietnam, and our group is almost complete. We have room for two more travellers.

So if Vietnam has been calling to you, but you’ve been waiting for someone else to say yes first, perhaps you don’t have to.
