Global Tours with Robert Byrd

Global Tours with Robert Byrd This page provides information about our tour group, which travels all over the world. These tours included trips to every corner of the world.

Dr. Milton Wheeler, a well known history professor at William Carey University, began organizing tours for his students and friends in the late 1960s. After Dr. Wheeler's health made it impossible for him to continue leading these tours, Robert Byrd, one of his former students and a frequent traveler with the group, agreed to continue to schedule trips with Dr. Wheeler's input and guidance. Since

2012 the travel group, led by Robert, have traveled to the following countries: Holland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Austria, Slovakia, The Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, France, Israel and Jordan. Our current trips planned for 2014 include, England, Wales, Scotland and France. Our group is comprised of people of all ages and walks of life. Our regular travelers come from all regions of Mississippi, as well as Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, Florida, California, Washington, and other states. We always welcome new people who share our love of travel.

After returning to our ship I went for a nice walk around the walls of Breisach. It is truly amazing what medieval humans could do without modern technology.

This morning we had a local guide conduct us on a tour of the beautiful town of St. Gallen, Switzerland, including the Old Town and the St. Gallen Abbey District, which has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. We visited the awe inspiring Baroque Cathedral, which is one of the last monumental monastery buildings created during the Baroque period, and also at the heart of the Abbey District, the Abbey Library, one of the oldest and most beautiful libraries in the world. Tonight, I strolled around the town again, and reaffirmed my long held belief that no place is as magical as a medieval European city at night.

This morning we arrived at the airport in Munich and then drove to visit the town of Landsberg am L**h, Germany. Here two
local guides led us on a tour of this beautiful mediaeval city. Landsberg received its town charter in the 13th century, after having been
settled much earlier at the point where a major salt road crossed over the L**h River. The town is now of interest due to being the location of the prison where Adolf Hi**er was incarcerated in 1924. It was during this incarceration that Hi**er wrote his book Mein Kampf. During the
Second World War the Kaufering Concentration Camp was located on the outskirts of the town.

Our last full day in Ireland found us exploring along the River Boyne, and especially the Brú na Bóinne, a renowned UNESCO World Heritage Site in County Meath. The focus of which are numerous Neolithic Passage Tombs, over 5,000 years old. After visiting these sites we returned to Dublin to view the 1,225 year old Book of Kells at the incredible 300 year old library of Trinity College.

Yesterday we left Belfast and drove back down to The Republic of Ireland. However, before leaving The United Kingdom country of Northern Ireland, we visited Royal Hillsborough Castle, King Charles III’s official residence in Northern Ireland. The house and gardens are beautiful. Back in The Republic we visited Malahide Castle before arriving at our hotel, The Grand Hotel Malahide, which is near Dublin.
