10:01 Hockey has somewhat of a cult status in the West End of Toronto. The pick up league posts each week’s skate at 10am and is always fully subscribed by 10:01. Most of this year’s Switzerland travel team participates in the league. Well fitting that they show off their T’s at the Swiss Top League game between Zurich and Fribourg. 10:01 Forever!

One of the arenas the Toronto West Benders played in Switzerland is the SwissLife Arena in Zurich. Not only is it the home of the ZSC Lions, the arena also currently hosts the IIHF World Championship.

The cold weather here has me craving cheese fondue. An expression of pure swiss-ness, this meal has a long tradition in the country and, of course, is part of any trip we have ever made to Switzerland with a Canadian hockey team.
The last group of b**r leaguers got to enjoy a dinner which is a unique restaurant with a dining tent and an outdoor space that feels like a mountain village. We pair the cheesy mass with a local white and later attack it with a Kirsch. We then venture outside to enjoy the chalets and the snack and drink stands with the local croud.

This 2019 hockey game packs a lot of meaning for our guys at the SNCHL. Our first game on the first trip abroad...
We almost arrived late to the game; and our opponents were waiting with a shot of Schnapps for us. Everything else was a dream too: national anthems played, the fans cheering us on, the after-game board with cold-cuts, cheese and b**r. We wore the black and gold adaptation of the Raptors shirts, in celebration of their NBA championship.
On a personal note, I scored our first goal, sporting a Sherwood 5030. We handed out an assortment of High Park Brewery b**rs that we brought over for the occasion. Smiles all around!

Some drive on diesel, some on propane, and some are electric. They wear team colours, a manufacturer's coat, or are dressed up in sponsorship logos and slogans. In Europe, our b**rleaguers get to watch the zambonis in between periods. Just havin' a bit of fun with it...
