THE NOBLE WARRIOR: Meet the Collared Inca! 🛡️⚔️

Welcome to Episode 08 of The Ecuador Hummer Tour. Today we introduce a bird of striking contrasts and an even stronger personality: the Collared Inca (Coeligena torquata).

At first glance, it looks like a refined gentleman in a black tuxedo with a brilliant white collar. But in the bird world, this "Inca" is a fearless knight. He is known for his aggressive defense of territory, never backing down from a mid-air duel to protect his nectar sources. 🗡️💨

For us at OWI Photo Tours, the Collared Inca is a favorite subject because of that crisp white patch. Capturing the detail in those snowy feathers while keeping the deep, velvety greens of the body is a masterclass in exposure and light control. 🏆

The Experience: Want to capture this bold knight through your own lens?

ACTING LOCALLY FOR GLOBAL IMPACT 🌍✨

Today is the International Day for Biodiversity, a United Nations observance celebrating the incredible variety of life on Earth and raising awareness to protect it. This year’s theme is "Acting Locally for Global Impact"—and that is exactly what drives us every single day.
Whether we are welcoming displaced species into our own wild garden sanctuary in Quito or guiding ethical photography tours across Ecuador’s most breathtaking ecosystems, our mission is to protect the birds and habitats we love. True conservation isn't just a global target; it starts with the local, responsible choices we make every time we step into the field.
How are you acting locally to protect biodiversity today? Let us know in the comments! 👇

MONARCH BUTTERFLY 🦋 🦋

When came on a tour with us and saw our wild garden, she told me about his passion for monarch butterflies.

Today I found this caterpillar in my garden, which will soon turn into a beautiful butterfly, undergoing one of nature’s most incredible processes: metamorphosis!

Keep protecting the monarch butterflies, Ali!

GOLDEN ELEGANCE: Meet the Fawn-breasted Brilliant! 🍂💎

Welcome to Episode 07 of The Ecuador Hummer Tour.
Today we introduce a bird that proves you don't need neon colors to be spectacular: the Fawn-breasted Brilliant (Heliodoxa rubinoides).

While most of its cousins flaunt iridescent greens, this "Brilliant" opts for a sophisticated palette of warm cinnamon and gold.

But the real magic happens when it catches the light—revealing a throat patch that glows like a burning ember in the misty cloud forest. 🏮✨

At OWI Photo Tours, we love this species for the challenge it presents: capturing the soft texture of its fawn feathers while perfectly timing that sudden burst of red iridescence. It’s all about patience and light management. 🏆

The Experience: Want to see this golden transformation through your own lens?

Next Episode: A noble knight in a white collar, but don’t let his elegant look fool you; he’s a fearless warrior who never backs down from a fight... ⚔️🛡️

Imagine a high-hanging city of woven baskets, where nature’s most skilled architects and dedicated mothers live in community. Meet the Russet-backed Oropendola

In these colonies, motherhood is a true feat of engineering. The females are the sole builders, weaving nests up to one and a half meters long that sway in the canopy. While a few dominant males handle protection, the females do it all: they weave, they incubate, and they provide for their chicks in a bustling neighborhood of up to 20 nests.

But there’s a secret to their survival. These mothers often share their colony with another species, the Yellow-rumped Cacique. It's not just a coincidence; it's a strategic alliance.

Do you know the hidden benefit behind this partnership between the Oropendola and the Cacique? I’ll tell you the answer in the comments!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the amazing moms (and the supportive partners) out there! 🌸

TEAMWORK IN THE TREETOPS: The Vermilion Flycatcher 🔴🌿

While it’s true that all mothers are legends, in the world of the Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus), the fathers truly step up!

In many bird species with strong sexual dimorphism (where the male is much more colorful than the female), flashy males often limit their role to fertilization, leaving the heavy lifting of chick-rearing to the camouflaged females.

However, the Vermilion Flycatcher is a beautiful exception. Not only does this vibrant red knight help feed the hungry chicks, but he also supports the mother by feeding her directly while she incubates the eggs.

And as you can see in the video, he’s even in charge of "taking out the trash" by removing f***l sacs to keep the nest clean and safe from predators.

Nature’s Lesson: True beauty isn't just in the plumage; it's in the partnership.

EMERALD POWERHOUSE: Meet the Green-crowned Brilliant! 💎🌿

Welcome to Episode 06 of The Ecuador Hummer Tour. Today, we shine the light on a true cloud forest giant: the Green-crowned Brilliant (Heliodoxa jacula).
This bird is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the western slopes. While many hummingbirds dance in the air, the Brilliant is a master of efficiency—often preferring to perch while it feeds, turning conservation of energy into an art form. But don’t let its composed nature fool you; when the sun catches that violet throat patch, it transforms into an iridescent jewel that demands your full attention. ⚡🐦
For us at OWI Photo Tours, photographing this species is about balancing its bold personality with the delicate, lush textures of its habitat. Capturing that vibrant emerald sheen against the soft shadows of the canopy is the goal for every lens that joins us in the field. 🏆

The Experience: Want to capture the brilliant majesty of the cloud forest? 📸

The Cinnamon Flycatcher / Mosquerito Canelo (Pyrrhomyias cinnamomeus), like many flycatchers, often returns to the same perch, scanning for flying insects before launching short sallies to catch them. This predictable behavior gives us excellent opportunities for photography.

🌏Happy Earth Day!

Today we celebrate the beauty, diversity, and fragility of our planet—the same natural wonders that inspire every journey we create. From lush rainforests to volcanic landscapes and unique wildlife, Earth reminds us how important it is to protect what makes it so extraordinary.

At Owi Photo Tours, we believe travel should not only inspire—but also respect and preserve the places we visit.

ELECTRIC VELVET: Meet the Velvet-purple Coronet! 🌌💜

Welcome to Episode 05 of The Ecuador Hummer Tour. Today we present a bird that defines the word "spectacular": the Velvet-purple Coronet (Boissonneaua jardini).

This is a bird of mystery. It spends much of its time looking like a dark silhouette against the lush green of the Chocó, but when it turns to face the sun, it reveals a chest and back of the most intense, iridescent purple you’ve ever seen. ⚡🐦

For us at OWI Photo Tours, this is the ultimate test of light management. Capturing that perfect "wings-up" pose while balancing the deep blacks and electric purples is what makes a photo truly "National Geographic level." 🏆

The Experience: Want to see this electric transformation through your own lens?

🚀 HOW TO BOOK: DM us "HUMMER" right now to receive our 2026 tour dates and join our next expedition to the cloud forest.
Next Episode: A small but mighty "green dragon" with a chest like a shimmering disco ball... 🛡️✨
