“We are nature conservationists and are trying to see how tourism can help us reach this goal”.

This sentence stayed with me during ‘Naturewatch’, a yearly event in Spain organized by nature enthusiasts, both professionals and hobbyists, this time in Barreiros (northern Galicia).

It made me think of my own motives to start my travel
company . Having an academic background in nature conservation and climate change adaptation, I realized that I can really relate to this mindset.

People ask me: but how did you end up in tourism, having such a different background? I realized again it is not that far away from each other. By connecting visitors from abroad to local wildlife guides, encouraging them to visit environmental protection NGO’s in Northern Spain and letting them stay at conscious or eco-certified accommodations, I also try to ‘use’ tourism to contribute to the livelihoods of nature conservationists and other passionate people trying to preserve nature and local customs in this region.

It was great to listen to the stories of like-minded people from Barreiros (and beyond), a region in Northern Spain that is so worth visiting (and yes, not only because of the Playa de las Catedrales, but also because of the local food, as you can see in the pictures 😉).

🦅 Do you enjoy birdwatching?

💡If so, then you’re in luck! Northern Spain harbors a huge amount of hidden habitats, where you can spot all sorts of wildlife in their natural ecosystems. One of these species is the beautiful Bearded Vulture, or the lammergeier, Europe's most endangered vulture species.

🌍 In 2005, the Bearded Vulture Foundation (FCQ) initiated a project to reintroduce Bearded Vultures in the mountainous peaks of Picos de Europa. During our tour, we’re fortunate to count on experienced guides to help us spot these alpine birds and give in-depth insight into their lives. We’ll enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and depending on the season, an amazing variety of other wildlife too!

🗣️ But don’t just take our word for it-- here’s what fellow travellers had to say about the experience...

😊 “The highlight of our holiday! We had a great day and enjoyed the tour immensely, [with] a charming guide so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about his subject. The planning of our tour went very smoothly and we felt that we were made welcome in our desire to see these beautiful birds.” By Michele and David, who joined us from the U.K..

🏔️ No matter your age or experience, we're sure you'll enjoy spotting these incredible creatures and immersing yourself in the beauty of nature.

❓ If you have any questions, or would like to reserve a spot, don’t hesitate to reach out to us or fill in an enquiry on our website. Include some thrilling bird-watching in your next Asturian adventure and join us in our “Searching for Bearded Vultures in Picos de Europa” tour here https://intoasturias.es/trip/searching-for-bearded-vultures/.

🚶 Do you enjoy hiking through beautiful landscapes, picturesque villages, and stunning historical sites?

🍃 Then you might be interested in the Camino de Santiago! This historical trail has been walked for centuries as part of a religious pilgrimage, leading you from Oviedo all the way to Santiago de Compostela—a whopping 324 km! Some experienced hikers enjoy challenging themselves by completing the full trip, but those on a shorter schedule can also experience its incredible views and historical significance through our “Taste of the Camino” tour.

🏔️ During this tour, we walk the first 12 km (approx. 7.5 miles) of the Camino. Starting in Oviedo, the capital of Asturias and origin of the Camino, we explore the gorgeously green Asturian countryside, enjoy breathtaking views and get to know each other and fellow pilgrims! As a bonus, get ready to learn about Asturian history, gastronomy, and geography as we follow this ancient trail.

🥪 We also stop by local villages for some bocadillos (typical Spanish sandwiches) and even get our ‘pilgrim credential’ stamped in a chapel, which is a truly authentic pilgrim experience.

😊 Become a pilgrim for a day and discover why this is one of our most popular tours.

❓ If you have any questions, or would like to reserve a spot, don’t hesitate to reach out to us or fill in an enquiry on our website. Find out more about the “Taste of the Camino” at https://bit.ly/taste-of-the-camino -- we can’t wait for you to discover this wonderful trail!

Hiking, Eating and Relaxing in an 18th Century Spa 💆‍

💡 How do you plan the perfect day in Oviedo?

😊 My ideal itinerary includes something active, something relaxing, and a well-earned ‘something tasty’. And if this combination appeals to you too, you're in for a treat; Oviedo is just the place!

🏔️ We start this fun-packed day by hiking a 10km ‘Senda Verde’. This is a ‘green route’ that leads you past the Asturian countryside, mountain tunnels and even the river Nalon. With a bit of luck, we’ll also be able to spot the surrounding wildlife, which includes vultures!

🧘 After working our legs and discovering Asturian history, we’ll take a well-deserved break... And what better way to do that than by relaxing at an 18th century spa? Release all your tensions in its world-class saunas and pools-- trust me, you’ll feel like a brand new person afterwards.

🥘 And last but not least is the food! There’s all kinds of restaurants in Asturian, but to really immerse yourself into the regional experience, we’d recommend trying a ‘Menú del Día’, a hearty 3-course meal with delicious local delicacies. From the traditional bean stew ‘fabada’ to the popular veal fillet ‘cachopo’, there’s a dish to everyone's taste.

❓So why not try it yourself? Next time you visit, enjoy a three-in-one adventure with us. Read more about this trip, and other tours on offer, on our website https://bit.ly/4h8f7D7. We can’t wait to plan your next trip with you!

I always say that Northern Spain is so diverse, that you can lie on the beach in the morning and visit the high mountains in the afternoon.

After today’s fam trip, part of the de I am not sure if I would really recommend to do this all in 1 day to my clients, but oh boy, what a great day.

We starten in the aspiring geoparque_costaquebrada where we went back millions of years in time with an excellent explanation of nansanatural. Enjoying magnifcent sea views while learning about the history of this area was so inspiring!

In the afternoon, we visited where we got to know a whole new territory with amazing views over the Picos de Europa and stories from locals told by Senda del Norte.

After two intensive days, we are happy to get to know new partners and places to bring intoAsturias’ clients to!

About us

intoAsturias was founded in 2018 with the aim to introduce more people to the beautiful and varied nature in Asturias in the north of Spain. We do this by offering (multiple) day trips, thereby working together with local guides, nature organizations and sustainable overnight locations. This way we support local ecotourism initiatives.

My name is Debora Losa- de Block. From childhood I have a great passion for nature. I have been active at the World Wildlife Fund from a young age, first as a youth member and later as a volunteer. It was therefore no surprise that I started studying Forest and Nature Management and then International Land and Water Management. During my studies I have been involved in the protection of sea turtles in Greece and conservation of mangrove forests in Indonesia. In May 2018 I completed my doctoral research at Wageningen University in which I studied projects where nature is used to adapt to climate change.

During my research I met my Spanish husband Marcos Losa Torviso who quickly took me to his birthplace Asturias in the north of Spain. For me it was a great surprise to discover such a green piece of Spain, with a beautiful coast and high mountains at a very short distance from each other! In the years that followed, our desire grew to move to Asturias. After the birth of our daughter Esther, we took the step and we embarked on the adventure. Together we are busy setting up intoAsturias and in this way let more people experience the beautiful nature and discover Asturias!
