Barbary Macaques on the Rock of Gibraltar

The Rock of Gibraltar is known for its wild Barbary Macaques. It is incredible to see them so comfortable with people and get to experience them up close. However, it is important to remember these are WILD animals. It is very important that you not carry food on you, as they will attempt to take the food, including your entire bag. Do not try to feed, touch, or hold the monkeys. They will bite and possibly attack you. Give them space and try not to surprise them in any way. To avoid juveniles from jumping on you, stay away from rocks, ledges, and fences.

While I was visiting a group came charging down the side of the mountain to the street where I was walking. They were fighting with each other and eventually made them way further down the mountain. I stayed close to rock and moved out of the street to give them space and make sure I did not get caught in the brawl. It is important to keep your distance to stay safe. There is a hierarchy on the mountain, and you do not want to get involved.

Even though they can be aggressive, I got to experience some really beautiful moments with them as well, from just observing them chilling on fences and rocks, to a family grooming and caring for young monkeys, and two young monkeys playing in a pool in an ape den like two little brothers fighting. When visiting the rock, I encourage you to take your time as you make your way down the rock to enjoy these moments with the Barbary Macaques who have allowed you into their home.

St. Michael’s Cave is a huge limestone cave deep within the Rock of Gibraltar, and it is a must stop destination when making your way down the rock.

It is famous for its huge natural auditorium in the Cathedral Cave chamber that serves as the viewing area for the “Awakening” light and sound show, which illustrates the birth of Gibraltar and the layers that formed over time from the bottom of the ocean floor to the formation of the Eurasian and African tectonic plates leading to intense heat and power as the rock rises out of the ocean. You are plunged into ice ages and warming periods.

The cave is not as large as others I have visited, but the stalactites and stalagmites are still beautiful and spectacular. A visit to the cave and experiencing the “Awakening” show is a nice escape from a hot summer afternoon on the rock too!

Entrance to the cave is included with the purchase of the nature reserve armband. Be aware that accessing the caves will require you to traverse uneven surfaces and stairs.

Toledo, Spain - City of Three Cultures

Toledo, Spain is known as the "City of Three Cultures" because for centuries, Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities coexisted within its walls. Therefore, there are variety of historical religious structures to explore in this city.

A great way to see a few is with the Toledo Tourist Wristband, which can be purchased at any of the included locations for 14 Euros. The wristband is waterproof and is good for seven days from the day of purchase. It is super easy to use. There is a QR code on the wristband that is easily scanned when entering one of the monuments. The seven monuments included in the wristband are:
• Real Colegio de Doncellas Nobles
• Monasterio San Juan de los Reyes
• Sinagoga Santa Maria la Blanca
• Iglesia de Santo Tome
• Iglesia del Salvador
• Iglesia de los Jesuitas (Iglesia de San Ildefonso)
• Mezquita Cristo de la Luz

There are QR codes posted at each location for free audio guides as well. Purchasing the wristband will save you money, instead of paying 3-4 Euros at each monument for entry.

When visiting Toledo, Spain in the summer, I recommend taking the 9pm train ride to get sunset views of the medieval city. The tour is 45 minutes with a 5 minute stop at Mirador del Valle.
