🇳🇱🏺 Séquia de la Nòria – waar de Romeinen hun sporen achterlieten

Wie langs de rotsachtige kust van Playa Montañar II wandelt, ontdekt een bijzonder stukje erfgoed van Jávea/Xàbia: de Séquia de la Nòria.

Deze geul werd in de Romeinse tijd uit de tosca-rots gehakt om zeewater naar het lager gelegen Saladar te leiden, waar zout werd gewonnen. Zout was toen kostbaar en onmisbaar voor het bewaren van vis. In de nabijgelegen Punta de l’Arenal zijn dan ook resten gevonden van een belangrijke Romeinse nederzetting met installaties voor visverwerking.

Eeuwen later kreeg de séquia haar huidige naam door een nòria, een door dieren aangedreven waterrad waarmee zeewater richting de zoutpannen werd gebracht.

Vandaag kun je de uitgehakte geul nog steeds in het rotsplateau zien. Een plek waar zee, tosca en meer dan 2.000 jaar geschiedenis letterlijk samenkomen. 🌊🪨

Een kleine historische ontdekking die je tijdens een wandeling langs de kust gemakkelijk kunt meenemen.

🇬🇧🏺 Séquia de la Nòria – where the Romans left their mark

Walking along the rocky coastline of Playa Montañar II, you can discover a fascinating piece of Jávea/Xàbia’s heritage: the Séquia de la Nòria.

The channel was carved into the tosca rock during Roman times to carry seawater towards the lower-lying Saladar, where salt was produced. Salt was extremely valuable and essential for preserving fish. Nearby, at Punta de l’Arenal, archaeological remains reveal an important Roman settlement with facilities used for fish processing.

Centuries later, the channel acquired its present name from a nòria, an animal-powered waterwheel used to move seawater towards the salt pans.

The channel carved into the rock can still be seen today. A remarkable place where the Mediterranean, the tosca stone of Jávea/Xàbia and more than 2,000 years of history come together. 🌊🪨

A little piece of history that’s easy to discover during a walk along the coast.

Paseando por la costa rocosa de Playa Montañar II se puede descubrir un rincón muy especial del patrimonio de Jávea/Xàbia: la Séquia de la Nòria.

Este canal fue excavado en la roca tosca en época romana para conducir agua del mar hacia la zona más baja del Saladar, donde se obtenía sal. La sal era entonces un producto muy valioso y fundamental para conservar el pescado. Muy cerca, en la Punta de l’Arenal, se han encontrado restos arqueológicos de un importante asentamiento romano con instalaciones relacionadas con el procesamiento del pescado.

Siglos después, la séquia recibió su nombre actual por una noria, movida por animales, que ayudaba a conducir el agua del mar hacia las salinas.

Hoy todavía podemos contemplar el canal excavado en la roca. Un lugar donde el Mediterráneo, la tosca de Jávea/Xàbia y más de 2.000 años de historia se encuentran. 🌊🪨

Un pequeño tesoro histórico que merece la pena descubrir durante un paseo por la costa.

Vlak bij de levendige jachthaven van Dénia ligt een andere wereld… de oude visserswijk.

Hier geen haast. Smalle straatjes, eenvoudige gevels en tafeltjes die vanzelf naar buiten schuiven zodra de zon zich laat voelen.

Dit is Spanje op z’n puurst: buiten leven, samen tafelen en genieten van eerlijke, typische gerechten waar smaak en eenvoud centraal staan. De geur van verse vis, het zachte geroezemoes van gesprekken en dat warme gevoel van “hier klopt het”.

Een plek waar authenticiteit geen concept is, maar gewoon… het leven zelf.

🇳🇱 🌿 De kapen van Jávea – bijzondere natuur tussen rots en zee

Langs de 25 km lange kustlijn van Jávea liggen vier markante kapen: Cabo de San Antonio, Cap Prim, Cap Negre en Cabo de la Nao. Stuk voor stuk bieden ze prachtige en indrukwekkende uitzichtpunten over de Middellandse Zee. Maar kijk ook eens verder dan het uitzicht: elke kaap heeft haar eigen landschap én bijzondere natuur.

🌊 Cabo de San Antonio – waar de Montgó de zee ontmoet
Hier eindigt het Montgómassief spectaculair in hoge kalkkliffen. Aan de voet ligt het beschermde mariene natuurreservaat, met velden van Neptunusgras (Posidonia oceanica), een belangrijke leefomgeving voor tal van zeedieren. Op de rotskliffen groeit bovendien de uiterst zeldzame Silene van Ifach (Silene hifacensis), aangepast aan bijna verticale kalkrotsen.

🥾 Cap Prim – wilde mediterrane natuur
Cap Prim ontdek je via een smal wandelpad door lage mediterrane begroeiing. Aan de zijde van de baai van Jávea ligt Cala Sardinera, terwijl aan de andere kant het uitzicht zich opent naar Portitxol en zijn eiland.

Bijzonder is hier de grootvruchtige jeneverbes (Juniperus macrocarpa), perfect aangepast aan zon, droogte, wind en zout.

🌳 Cap Negre – wortels zoeken hun weg door de rots
Op de hoge, ruige kliffen van Cap Negre zie je prachtig hoe planten zich aanpassen aan een omgeving waar nauwelijks aarde is. Wortels volgen barsten en spleten in de kalksteen, soms meterslang, op zoek naar vocht en houvast — zoals op onze foto indrukwekkend te zien is. Ook hier groeit de grootvruchtige jeneverbes (Juniperus macrocarpa).

🌸 Cabo de la Nao – een kleine botanische wereld
De zonovergoten kalkkliffen lijken soms bijna kaal, maar schijn bedriegt. In de botanische microreserve zijn maar liefst 62 soorten vaatplanten geregistreerd. Daaronder de rots-scabiosa (Pseudoscabiosa saxatilis), die in spleten van de kalkrots groeit, en de zeldzame Valenciaanse paardenhoefklaver (Hippocrepis valentina).

💚 Kijk bij een bezoek aan de kapen dus niet alleen naar de blauwe zee en de spectaculaire vergezichten. Kijk ook eens dichterbij: naar planten die uit vrijwel kale rotsen groeien, jeneverbessen die de zeewind trotseren en wortels die hun weg zoeken door het kalksteen.

Vier kapen, vier verschillende natuurverhalen — en vier prachtige plekken om de wilde kant van Jávea te ontdekken. 🌿🌊

🇬🇧 🌿 The capes of Jávea – remarkable nature between rock and sea

Along Jávea’s 25-kilometre coastline lie four distinctive capes: Cabo de San Antonio, Cap Prim, Cap Negre and Cabo de la Nao. Each offers beautiful and impressive viewpoints across the Mediterranean. But look beyond the views: every cape has its own landscape and remarkable natural world.

🌊 Cabo de San Antonio – where the Montgó meets the sea
Here the Montgó massif ends dramatically in high limestone cliffs. Below lies a protected marine reserve with meadows of Neptune grass (Posidonia oceanica), an important habitat for Mediterranean marine life. The cliffs are also home to the extremely rare Silene of Ifach (Silene hifacensis), adapted to almost vertical limestone rock.

🥾 Cap Prim – wild Mediterranean nature
A narrow walking trail leads through low Mediterranean vegetation towards Cap Prim. Cala Sardinera lies on the side facing the Bay of Jávea, while on the other side the view opens towards Portitxol and its island.

Look out for the large-fruited juniper (Juniperus macrocarpa), remarkably well adapted to sunshine, drought, wind and salt.

🌳 Cap Negre – roots finding their way through rock
On the rugged cliffs of Cap Negre, plants survive where there is hardly any soil. Roots follow cracks in the limestone, sometimes for metres, searching for moisture and anchorage — impressively visible in our photo. The large-fruited juniper (Juniperus macrocarpa) also grows here.

🌸 Cabo de la Nao – a miniature botanical world
These sun-drenched limestone cliffs may appear almost bare, but appearances are deceptive. 62 vascular plant species have been recorded in its botanical micro-reserve, including rock scabious (Pseudoscabiosa saxatilis) and the rare Valencian horseshoe vetch (Hippocrepis valentina).

💚 So when visiting Jávea’s capes, don’t just admire the blue sea and spectacular views. Look a little closer at the plants growing from almost bare rock, junipers resisting the sea winds and roots finding their way through the limestone.

🇪🇸 🌿 Los cabos de Jávea – naturaleza entre roca y mar

A lo largo de los 25 km de costa de Jávea se encuentran cuatro cabos emblemáticos: el Cabo de San Antonio, Cap Prim, Cap Negre y el Cabo de la Nao. Todos ofrecen magníficos e impresionantes miradores sobre el Mediterráneo. Pero vale la pena mirar más allá de las vistas: cada cabo tiene su propio paisaje y una naturaleza particular.

🌊 Cabo de San Antonio – donde el Montgó se encuentra con el mar
Aquí el macizo del Montgó termina espectacularmente en altos acantilados calizos. A sus pies se encuentra la reserva natural marina protegida, con praderas de posidonia (Posidonia oceanica), un hábitat esencial para numerosas especies marinas. En estos acantilados crece también la rarísima silene de Ifach (Silene hifacensis), adaptada a paredes calizas casi verticales.

🥾 Cap Prim – naturaleza mediterránea en estado puro
Un estrecho sendero atraviesa la vegetación mediterránea baja hasta Cap Prim. Hacia la bahía de Jávea se encuentra Cala Sardinera; al otro lado, las vistas se abren hacia Portitxol y su isla.

Aquí destaca el enebro marítimo (Juniperus macrocarpa), perfectamente adaptado al sol, la sequía, el viento y la sal.

🌳 Cap Negre – raíces que encuentran su camino entre las rocas
En los abruptos acantilados de Cap Negre, la vegetación sobrevive donde apenas hay tierra. Las raíces siguen grietas de la roca caliza, a veces durante metros, buscando humedad y un lugar donde sujetarse — algo que se aprecia de forma espectacular en nuestra foto. También aquí encontramos el enebro marítimo (Juniperus macrocarpa).

🌸 Cabo de la Nao – un pequeño mundo botánico
Sus acantilados bañados por el sol pueden parecer casi desnudos, pero las apariencias engañan. En su microrreserva botánica se han registrado 62 especies de plantas vasculares, entre ellas Pseudoscabiosa saxatilis y la rara Hippocrepis valentina.

💚 Cuando visites los cabos, no mires solamente el mar azul y las espectaculares vistas. Fíjate también en las plantas que crecen entre las rocas, los enebros que desafían el viento marino y las raíces que encuentran su camino a través de la piedra caliza.

🇳🇱 ⚓ Duanes de la Mar – het charmante vissershart van Jávea

Wie de haven van Jávea bezoekt, kijkt best eens wat verder dan de boulevard en de boten. Achter de haven, rond de kerk van Nuestra Señora de Loreto, ligt het oude hart van de visserswijk Duanes de la Mar.

De band van Jávea met de zee gaat eeuwen terug. Al in de Romeinse tijd was er hier maritieme activiteit, maar vooral de 19e eeuw betekende een opmerkelijke bloeiperiode. Jávea groeide dankzij de rozijnenhandel uit tot een internationaal actieve handelshaven. De lokaal geproduceerde rozijnen werden vanuit de haven per schip uitgevoerd naar buitenlandse markten, waaronder Noord-Europa en zelfs Amerika. Het moet een bijzonder levendig beeld zijn geweest: zeilschepen, handelswaar en bedrijvigheid langs een kust die we vandaag vooral met vakantie associëren.

Toen de rozijnenhandel aan het einde van de 19e eeuw terugviel, kreeg de visserij een steeds belangrijkere rol en groeide rond de haven een echte vissersgemeenschap.

Vandaag zijn het juist die charmante straatjes rond de kerk die een wandeling zo leuk maken. Oude en vernieuwde gevels staan er naast elkaar, met kleine restaurants, terrasjes en onverwachte hoekjes. Geen grootse bezienswaardigheden, maar een stukje Jávea dat je vooral ontdekt door er gewoon doorheen te wandelen.

Midden in de wijk staat de bijzondere Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, ingewijd in 1967. De opvallende betonnen constructie verwijst naar de zee: binnen lijkt het alsof je onder de kiel van een schip staat. Een moderne kerk, maar helemaal verweven met het visserskarakter van Duanes.

En dat vissersleven is hier nog altijd aanwezig. De vissersboten keren terug naar de haven met hun vangst en in La Lonja wordt de verse vis verhandeld. Even verder liggen zeiljachten en plezierboten — het Jávea van vroeger en vandaag gewoon naast elkaar.

🇬🇧 ⚓ Duanes de la Mar – Jávea’s charming fishing heart

When visiting Jávea’s harbour, look a little further than the promenade and the boats. Just behind the port, around the church of Nuestra Señora de Loreto, lies the old heart of the fishing quarter, Duanes de la Mar.

Jávea’s relationship with the sea goes back centuries. Maritime activity already existed here in Roman times, but the 19th century brought a remarkable period of prosperity. Thanks to the raisin trade, Jávea developed into an internationally active trading port. Locally produced raisins were shipped from the harbour to foreign markets, including Northern Europe and even America. It must have been a fascinating sight: sailing ships, merchandise and bustling trade along a coastline we now associate mainly with holidays.

When the raisin trade declined towards the end of the 19th century, fishing became increasingly important and a true fishing community developed around the harbour.

Today, it is precisely these charming streets around the church that make the area so enjoyable to explore. Old and renovated façades stand side by side, with small restaurants, terraces and unexpected corners. No grand monuments are needed here — this is a part of Jávea best discovered simply by wandering around.

At its heart stands the remarkable Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, inaugurated in 1967. Its striking concrete architecture is inspired by the sea: inside, it feels as though you are standing beneath the keel of a ship. A modern church, yet deeply connected to Duanes’ fishing heritage.

And fishing is still part of everyday life. Fishing boats return to the harbour with their catch and fresh fish is traded at La Lonja. Nearby, sailing yachts and leisure boats complete the scene — Jávea’s past and present side by side.

🇪🇸 ⚓ Duanes de la Mar – el encantador corazón marinero de Jávea

Cuando visites el puerto de Jávea, mira un poco más allá del paseo marítimo y de los barcos. Justo detrás del puerto, alrededor de la iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, se encuentra el antiguo corazón del barrio marinero de Duanes de la Mar.

La relación de Jávea con el mar se remonta a muchos siglos atrás. Ya en época romana existía aquí actividad marítima, pero fue sobre todo el siglo XIX el que trajo una extraordinaria época de prosperidad. Gracias al comercio de la pasa, Jávea se convirtió en un puerto con una importante actividad comercial internacional. Las pasas producidas en la zona se embarcaban desde aquí hacia mercados extranjeros, entre ellos el norte de Europa e incluso América. Debió de ser una imagen fascinante: veleros, mercancías y una intensa actividad comercial en una costa que hoy asociamos sobre todo con las vacaciones.

Cuando el comercio de la pasa disminuyó a finales del siglo XIX, la pesca fue adquiriendo cada vez más importancia y alrededor del puerto creció una auténtica comunidad marinera.

Hoy son precisamente esas encantadoras calles alrededor de la iglesia las que hacen tan agradable descubrir Duanes. Fachadas antiguas y renovadas conviven con pequeños restaurantes, terrazas y rincones inesperados. No hacen falta grandes monumentos: es uno de esos lugares que se disfruta simplemente paseando.

En pleno corazón del barrio se encuentra la singular Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Loreto, inaugurada en 1967. Su espectacular estructura de hormigón está inspirada en el mar: en su interior parece que caminamos bajo la quilla de un barco. Una iglesia moderna, pero profundamente vinculada al carácter pesquero de Duanes.

Y la pesca sigue formando parte de la vida del barrio. Los barcos regresan al puerto con sus capturas y en La Lonja se comercializa el pescado fresco. Muy cerca, veleros y embarcaciones de recreo completan la imagen — la Jávea de ayer y de hoy, una junto a la otra.
