🇪🇸 A LITTLE SLICE OF SATURDAY MORNING SPAIN ❤️

Caleta de Vélez market might be smaller than some of the others along the coast, but that’s part of its charm.

It’s vibrant, friendly and properly local — colourful fruit & veg, flowers, clothes, spices, plants and plenty of those random things you didn’t know you needed until you spotted them! And I have 27 floaty dresses to prove it 🙈

We’re really spoilt here because there’s a market somewhere nearby on most days of the week, but Caleta on a Saturday morning is one of our favourites — and it’s only 20 minutes from us here at Unique Retreats Spain 🙌🏻

Sometimes I go on my own with absolutely nothing I need to buy. I just wander, practise my Spanish, people-watch and immerse myself in everyday Spanish life. I love it. ❤️🇪🇸

It’s these simple little experiences that I think make staying here so special too. Not just the pool, the sunshine and the views, but getting out and experiencing a little bit of real Andalucía.

Tomorrow I’m off to Torrox Costa market, right beside the beach. 🌊☀️Because I always need another floaty dress to add to my collection 😃

I wonder what else I’ll come home with that I absolutely didn’t need… 😂🛍️

More recipe testing at Casa Fina for our guests at Unique Retreats Spain … 😋

For those chasing protein and cutting carbs (us!🙋‍♀️), I wanted to try a deconstructed burger. No bun, but absolutely NOT lacking in flavour!

BBQ’d Angus burger, melted cheese, pickles, spicy salsa, pan-fried Portobello mushrooms, thick slices of beef tomato, spring onions and - the best bit - topped with crispy air-fried jamón. 😋🔥

Verdict? Definitely a keeper — but next time I’m making the burger from scratch (a must!), adding a little spicy guacamole, a Dijon mustard & mayo mix and a light dressing on the salad. 👌

Jay’s request for version 2.0? A big Portobello or field mushroom either side of the burger as the “bun” because bread is a no-no here at the moment.

Quite how the hell you’re supposed to get THAT in your mouth, I have absolutely no idea. 😂😂

Still, all in the name of research for our retreat guests… it’s a tough job! 😉❤️

What would you add to make it perfect? And DON’T say the bun!!! 🤣

On Wednesday, Jay decided it was time for a spot of “exploring” for Mountain Bike Spain — apparently there’s lots of “work” to do before the big group arrives shortly. Funny that… I’m sure I could smell b**r on him when he got back! 🍺

Anyway, here’s his (genuinely incredible) video of some of the local mountain bike routes available right on our doorstep.

Recipe creating and testing is one of the tougher jobs here at Nikki Channon… 😉😋

We’re always trying out new dishes for our guests — delicious, relaxed Mediterranean-style food that’s full of flavour and perfect for sharing around the table after a busy day.

Tonight’s experiment…

ALBÓNDIGAS DE CERDO Y CHORIZO CON SALSA DE TOMATE 🇪🇸
Pork & chorizo meatballs in a rich tomato sauce, served with a roasted Mediterranean vegetable tray bake. ❤️

First attempt… and this one is definitely making it onto the Unique Retreats menu! 🙌

Because the food is every bit as important as the retreat. Good food, good w**e, good company… that’s what evenings at Casa Fina are all about. 🥂☀️

🇪🇸❤️ FOUR DAYS, THREE CULTURES & 16 TAPAS! ❤️🇪🇸

Never have we experienced such fun in four days! 🎉

A mini movie because there is absolutely no way to capture the madness and magic of Festival in ten photos! 😂

For four days this beautiful little white village completely transforms.

The streets are packed, the plazas are buzzing, music is coming from everywhere, there are processions, dancing, performers, markets, concerts, fabulous smells wafting from every corner…and thousands of people wandering around eating, drinking and generally having a VERY good time. 😂🍷💃

And obviously, we threw ourselves wholeheartedly into the important cultural activity of… the Tapas Route. 🤣

16 stations.
16 different tapas.
One tapas passport.
Four nights but we did them all in two 🤣

DONE ✅ and a t-shirt each as proof!

Basically a highly organised endurance event involving food and w**e.

But what makes this fiesta so special is the story behind it.

The Festival de las Tres Culturas celebrates the Christian, Jewish and Muslim heritage that has shaped Frigiliana and Andalucía over the centuries. You see those influences everywhere here – in the winding Moorish streets, the architecture, food, music and traditions.

So amongst all the partying, eating and general chaos, there’s a real celebration of the history and cultures that helped create the Andalucía we love today.

And THAT atmosphere… ❤️

Hot, noisy, ridiculously busy, colourful, joyful, exhausting and absolutely bloody brilliant.

Frigiliana was the village that first stole our hearts and started our love affair with Spain, so being back here for this incredible fiesta felt pretty special.

We ate. We drank. We walked approximately 97,000 miles uphill. 😂 We laughed until our faces hurt.

And somehow we completed all 18 tapas stations.

For the culture, obviously. 🤣🍷🇪🇸

A little holiday for us! We are recovering after the BEST four nights away at Frigiliana Festival 3 Culturas ❤️

We only needed to drive 30 minutes to experience this incredible weekend which celebrates everything Andalucia has to offer in THE most beautiful setting 🤩

And there may have been a camera man following us around for the day to capture us having some serious downtime with friends 🎥

Did we mention we’re going to be on the telly box?! 📺

⚡️WE DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING LAST NIGHT! ⚡️

In fact I didn’t see it at all - curled up, fast asleep in bed - but Jay caught this. Looks like we had quite a view from our terrace! 😍
