✈️ Sydney to London in a single leap: Qantas prepares the world’s longest flight

In 1947, travelling from Sydney to London took four days. A Qantas aircraft touched down seven times — in Darwin, Singapore, Calcutta, Karachi, Cairo, Castel Benito and Rome. Passengers could step outside, stretch their legs and prepare for the next stage. The name “Kangaroo Route” made perfect sense: Europe was reached through a series of long hops.

Almost 80 years later, Qantas is preparing to remove the final stop.

The Airbus A350-1000ULR developed for Project Sunrise first flew from Toulouse to Melbourne in around 20 hours. A few days later, it returned to France along a deliberately extended route across the Pacific, North America and the Atlantic. The aircraft covered 23,075 kilometres in 24 hours and 24 minutes.

There were no passengers on board. Test pilots and engineers were examining its fuel-management system, cabin climate and performance during a flight lasting longer than an ordinary human day.

Aircraft of this type are expected to begin flying nonstop between Sydney and London in October 2027. Commercial services will take up to 22 hours but could shorten the total journey by around four hours.

To make that marathon more bearable, Qantas will install only 238 seats. The aircraft will feature enclosed First and Business Class suites, a roomier Economy cabin and a dedicated Wellbeing Zone where passengers can stand, stretch, drink water and have a snack. Lighting and meal times will be adjusted to the destination time zone to help reduce jet lag.

In 80 years, seven stops will have become one very long night above the clouds.

Low Danube Water Levels Disrupt River Cruises in Hungary

A prolonged dry spell in Central Europe is beginning to affect Hungary’s river tourism industry. Exceptionally low water levels on the Danube have left some cruise vessels unable to continue their journeys, while several sightseeing services have been temporarily suspended.

According to Hungary’s water authority, the river level in Budapest came within eight centimetres of its historic low on 16 July. Cruise ships can still enter Hungary, but some vessels have been forced to wait in ports or adjust their itineraries.

The most significant disruption has been reported in Budapest and the southern town of Mohács, where several cruise vessels remain unable to proceed. Meanwhile, the northern ports of Komárom and Gönyű are handling a considerable share of the remaining traffic.

Hungarian passenger shipping operator MAHART-PassNave reported an 18% decline in July bookings following cancellations. Sightseeing services from Budapest to destinations further north have been suspended temporarily. Avalon Waterways has also cancelled a small number of upcoming cruises on the Danube and Rhine.

River cruising represents an important part of Hungary’s visitor economy. Approximately 600,000 international cruise passengers travel through the country each year, generating business for hotels, restaurants, guides, transport providers and tourist attractions.

Water levels are expected to rise slightly, which could allow some services to resume. Nevertheless, industry representatives see the current disruption as part of a broader operational challenge. Cruise companies may increasingly need to rely on alternative ports, coach transfers and modified itineraries when sections of the Danube become temporarily unnavigable.
