We are honoured to welcome (Dr) Alexandra Makin to lead not one, but two very special retreats inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry.

Dr Alexandra Makin, is an incredible textile archaeologist and professional embroiderer whose work brings early medieval textiles and embroidery to life through research, teaching and hands-on reconstruction.

During Lorna and Anna’s retreat, we had the chance to visit Sanssouci and the Neues Palais in Potsdam. We were completely amazed by the beauty and history of the place, but what stayed with us most were the incredible details.

Especially the Shell Grotto in the Neues Palais, a room unlike anything we had seen before, with its walls covered in thousands of shells, minerals, crystals and stones. Everywhere you look, there is another little detail to discover.

And that’s a wrap on an incredible week!

What a joy it’s been spending these days with our Queen of Ribbon Embroidery, Lorna Bateman Embroidery .

We stitched, we visited, we shared stories… and most of all, we laughed SO much!

A week filled with creativity, friendship, beautiful stitches and unforgettable memories. Thank you, Lorna, for making it so special!

A wee love letter to bobbin lace.

Morane spent a week at the Edinburgh Lace Course at Heriot-Watt University and what a week it was. A chance to dive a little deeper into a craft she’s completely fallen for, and to continue a bobbin lace journey that started a year ago.

There was making, unmaking, getting stuck, asking her Frances her tutor for help… and then making it all over again.

But perhaps the loveliest part of this journey has been discovering the little world that surrounds lacemaking, the people.

The patience, generosity and passion of those keeping these traditional skills alive is something really quite special.

One year in, still learning, still getting tangled… and falling a little more in love with bobbin lace along the way.
