🎶 BACK TO LIFE, BACK TO REALITY...🎶
It's La Rentrée - literally "The Return", when everyone returns to work, school & life as normal, and summer is Officially Over - but not for us!

Now's the time to enjoy the beaches, attractions, sites and more, without the crowds, kids, high prices and high temperatures - the perfect time to enjoy France at its best!

✏️ DRAWING A LINE.....
A new offering from the Nîmes Tourist Office this summer is "Nímes en Dessin", combining a guided tour with sketching some of Nîmes' most iconic monuments.

✏️ Led by bilingual tour guide and former architect Matt O'Reilly, 18 of us set off from the Tourist Office to the Arènes, Fontaine Pradier & Maison Carrée, learning about the monuments and how to sketch - perspectives, vanishing points and so on, with time to perfect our individual sketches (or not, as the case may be!), and finishing just in time to enjoy the Jeudis de Nîmes night market and live music throughout the town.

✏️ Held every Thursday during August from 5.30-7.00pm (with different locations and subjects each time), "Nîmes en Dessin" is free, with drawing materials supplied by the Tourist Office.

🎶 CURE-ALL!
For the last three days, Nîmes has been full of black t-shirt-clad people "of a certain age" (as the French say!), all in town for the three concerts at the Arènes by The Cure.

All three completely sold out as soon as tickets went on sale, with many fans flying in from overseas to experience their favourite band in the unique setting of Nîmes' Roman amphitheatre.

Hotels, restaurants & bars are all jam-packed so it's a bumper weekend for Nîmes hospitality! It's 7.45pm on the huge terrace of Balthazar, one of our fave cafés in the Place de Marché, with every table in the entire square packed with concert goers (in addition, the guest in our rental apartment Au Coeur de Nîmes is part of the Cure entourage, running the pre-concert parties each day!)

The Cure are the closing act of this year's Festival de Nîmes - two full months of amazing concerts in the Arènes, featuring France's top stars plus US/Brit stars including Katy Perry, Black Eyed Peas, Sting, Marilyn Manson, Pixies, Jamiroquai and more, plus "Gladiator Live" - the original movie shown on a giant screen with 200 musicians and singers providing the live soundtrack.

Check back in for next year's Festival de Nîmes - acts are confirmed throughout the year, but you have to move as tickets sell out super-fast!

A wonderful couple of days chez old friend, Chinese chef, writer & TV cook Ken Hom and his husband, artist Daniel Taurine, in their stunning 12th century townhouse in Catus in the Lot region of France.

Ken and I have known each other for more years than I care to remember - my very first day as PR director for The Peninsula Hong Kong (first ever day in PR! first day working in a five-star hotel!) coincided with the first day of Ken's East-meets-West F&B promotion for the hotel......

I was thrown into the deep end big-time - a major food promotion with a big UK TV star, press meetings & meals, TV & radio interviews, LOTS of eating & drinking (luckily all of it delicious!), and Ken coaching me through it all with style, grace and humour. Truly a baptism by fire, but I came through it, and we've been friends ever since!

Relaxing, swimming, exploring Catus,, attending Daniel's latest gallery opening, meeting their HK friends - and of course lots of delicious fare - a perfect couple of days!

Merci Ken et Daniel!

🇨🇵 HAPPY FÊTE NATIONALE, FRANCE! 🇨🇵
It's 14 July, French National Day, and celebrations are in full swing across the country!

🇨🇵 These include military parades and flypasts, "animations" (= entertainment) and the much-loved "bals des pompiers", when fire stations throw open their doors for parties to raise funds for firefighters' charities.

🇨🇵 Firework displays are usually almost always part of the day's events, but sadly have been cancelled across France this year due to the tinder-dry state of vegetation here following the heatwaves.

🇨🇵 La Fête Nationale celebrates the storming of the royal Bastille prison in Paris on 14 July 1789, symbolising the start of the French revolution.

🇨🇵 Exactly one year later - on 14 July 1790 - the Fête de la Féderation was a massive national celebration of peace unity and reconciliation one year after the Revolution started.

🇨🇵 Thus both events mark the French national identity - a mix of revolutionary spirit and political unity!

PICNIC IN THE PARK.......
A first for Nîmes - "La Table de Marianne", a giant picnic in the Jardins de la Fontaine on the eve of National Day, 14 July.

Marianne's the face of the French Revolution, representing liberty and the Republic.

Everyone was invited, so thousands of Nimois showed up with food and drinks, picnicking on the lawns and the long tables and benches laid out through the stunning gardens (dating from the 1750s, the Jardins are France's first public park and the second in Europe!)

Entertainment included music, tightrope and other stunt acts, stiltwalkers and more, much more (plus food trucks for non-picnickers!).

A fantastic evening - and hopefully the start of yet another fabulous Nîmes tradition!

"Is everybody here from Nîmes? We have so much to thank you for - you invented jeans!"

Katy Perry roared tonight in a sold-out concert in the Arènes - and for those of us who didn't move fast enough to get a ticket, it was drinks, dinner & enjoying the music from outside!

🗡 GLADIATOR LIVE!
An amazing night in the Nîmes Arènes - where gladiators once fought, a screening of Sir Ridley Scott's multi-Oscar-winning masterpiece "Gladiator", together with 200 musicians and singers providing the live soundtrack!

Part of the 2026 Festival de Nîmes, this is the second live "Gladiator" concert. I went to the first one in 2022, and will be back if they do it again. Absolutely stunning - and highly recommended!
