Cosy nights in the yurts 🄰

How lovely are these photos our guests sent to us last night?!
Now is such a great time of year to cosy up in a yurt; the sun has started making an appearance during the day, so you can actually get out and enjoy our countryside location. Then the cool evenings are perfect for lighting the woodburner, jumping in a steaming woodfired hot tub and just really feeling those Hygge vibes.

Did you know that we are dog friendly? Not just dogs, we’ve also had cats stay with us before and we’ve been asked about birds as well… do you take your pet on holiday with you?

Are you a night in or a night out kind of person?

We prefer a night in. I’m a cosy yurt with a private woodfired hot tub, gazing at the stars with your special person.

We’re a small, independent glamping site located in Staffordshire close to Alton Towers and the Peak District, we are NOT a volume business.

So instead of bundling everything into one high nightly rate, we keep our base price lower and let guests choose what they actually want.

It means flexibility, transparency, and no paying for things you won’t use.

Head to our pinned post where you can see a full transparent explanation of our prices.

And to book your yurt getaway send us a DM or comment below and we’ll send some details.

You may find this surprising but I actually don’t want EVERYONE to stay with us. I mean I would love it if every single person loved the idea of staying in a cosy yurt in the snow, but the reality is that A. It doesn’t appeal to everyone and B. Some people will struggle due to lack of experience with fires.

And that’s ok!!

We recently had a negative review, and it shook me a bit because we never get negative reviews! In this review they said they just couldn’t get the yurt warm and that we weren’t a suitable ā€˜winter getaway’ option. I offered to help by lighting the woodburner for them while they were out, getting the yurt warm for their return but they declined my help šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

We are always happy to help with lighting fires and giving tips, but realistically we aren’t always around.

So, if you aren’t confident with fires, hang on until the spring/ summer months. We really do want you to enjoy your stay, and although we know our Mongolian yurts are capable of being really warm- even in winter (they are traditionally used in much colder countries than the UK for an offgrid way of living) - not everyone will be able to achieve this.

Are you a winter explorer, or are you hibernating at home until spring?

We believe in transparency, flexibility, and paying people fairly.
This is what goes into our pricing, and why we offer optional extras instead of an inflated nightly rate.

We appreciate it isn’t in everyone’s budget, and that’s ok. But hopefully this shows how one of our yurt stays is actually incredible value for money ā˜ŗļø and this doesn’t even cover the amazing Neals Yard products in all of our bathrooms, to a value of over Ā£80 for you to pamper yourself with during your stay šŸ’™

Being able to light a fire is an essential skill if you are staying in one of our yurts during winter.

With the woodburner lit the yurts get so toasty and warm, and most guests who haven’t stayed in a yurt before are pleasantly surprised.

However we have had a few guests in the past who have struggled with the fire. Here’s a quick how to of a different method I used to lighting the woodburner. I’ll post my normal method another time and you can see which you prefer.

Before I explain each step to lighting the woodburner here are a few mistakes people often make:

šŸ”„ not using enough kindling, 8-10 sticks is ideal. You can use more but you will be using up your kindling and it isn’t necessary. Once you’ve got the hang of it you can even use less. But to start with 8-10 is great.
šŸ”„ putting logs on the kindling before it is burning well and putting out the fire. Put logs on gently and only once the kindling is really burning, not just the fire lighter. I always start from the sides so that I don’t flatten the kindling and put the fire out.
šŸ”„ just using kindling and not putting logs on which then leads to running out of kindling
šŸ”„ on the flip side some people try to light the logs directly with a firelighter, whilst it is possible it’s much harder to do as the firelighters don’t burn for long enough to properly light a big log- use kindling to make life easier.
šŸ”„using too many firelighters and running out. Yes you are more likely to get the fire going if you use more firelighters but if you are lighting it correctly 1 or 2 is enough and then you won’t run out of firelighters.

So here’s what I did in this video to get the fire going:
šŸ”„ put three larger logs in the bottom of the woodburner.
šŸ”„ Topped this with kindling in a cross cross pattern so that air can flow through the kindling.
šŸ”„ The way the logs and kindling sat allowed me to put 1 firelighter under the kindling easily, so I used 2 just to be sure (I usually only use 1) and put 1 under and 1 on top of the kindling.
šŸ”„ I lit both firelighters.
šŸ”„ I closed the woodburner door to ensure that no logs could fall out as the fire got going, but left the air vent fully open (cont in caption)
