Medieval castles were often whitewashed to protect the stone walls. Cou ld Castell Caerffili have looked like this when it was new? (And yes, I know it's flying the English flag when it should be the De Clare colours! Can't win them all with AI !!!! }

If you ever visit take a look outside. Not only can you see the magnificent fortifications of you might also notice the railings on the terrace. The arrows represent the conflict that the castle has seen, in particular the rebellion of Llywelyn Bren. More on his story another time

The south gate of Caerphilly Castle is often overlooked, but I think it's amazing. It's quite possible that the moat extended all around the castle creating Gilbert de Clare's vision of a truly concentric castle. Attackers would need to cross water to reach the outer walls, then more water to reach the centre courtyard. This was state of the art castle building. Not just for defence but a statement of power, wealth and ambition.
Next time your in Caerphilly, take a walk around to the south gate and admire the strength in those walls. Then you can pop in to the pub with the best view of the castle, which happens to be right next door!

Love these photos of Cardiff Road. Much of it has changed but if you look up above the shop fronts today, you'll still see the windows of the houses they once were. A significant part of the history of Caerphilly which is still visible but usually unnoticed. Take a look next time you're on Cardiff Road
