🇬🇪 Khertvisi Fortress – Georgia

Another stop where the location is every bit as impressive as the history.

Khertvisi Fortress sits high above the valley in southern Georgia, guarding a route that has been strategically important for centuries. From inside the old stone walls you get fantastic views along the gorge and across the small settlement below.

It's much less polished than some of Georgia's better-known attractions — narrow passages, rough stonework and steep climbs — which actually makes it feel more authentic.

One of those places that's easy to drive past on the way to Vardzia, but definitely worth stopping for.

More than just a cooking class... it's a taste of Georgian culture. 🇬🇪🧀

Today we learned to make two of Georgia's most famous dishes from scratch.

🥟 Khinkali – mixing the dough, preparing the filling, learning the famous folds and, of course, tasting the finished dumplings.

🧀 Imeruli Khachapuri – making fresh dough, grating traditional Georgian cheese, filling and shaping the bread before baking it until golden.

It's easy to eat local food when you travel. It's something completely different to learn the recipes from local people and make them yourself.

Experiences like this are what make travel memorable. We leave with full stomachs, new skills, and a much greater appreciation for Georgia's incredible food and hospitality.

🇬🇪 Uplistsikhe – Georgia’s Ancient City Carved from Rock

From medieval Vardzia to somewhere considerably older…

Uplistsikhe is an extraordinary ancient settlement carved directly into the rock above the Mtkvari River, near Gori. Its history stretches back around 3,000 years, making it one of the oldest urban settlements in Georgia.

Walking across the site, you can still explore chambers, tunnels, streets, halls, storage areas and places of worship cut straight from the sandstone. At one time Uplistsikhe was an important centre on the trade routes connecting different parts of the ancient world.

One of the most striking sights is the Uplistsuli Church, built centuries later on top of the ancient settlement — a Christian church overlooking a site whose history reaches back to Georgia's pre-Christian past.

It’s also a very different experience from Vardzia. Rather than disappearing deep inside a mountainside, here you're walking across an exposed rocky landscape, climbing through passages and caves with huge views over the surrounding countryside and the Mtkvari River.

🇬🇪 Rabati Castle – Akhaltsikhe, Georgia

Another completely different side of Georgia.

Rabati Castle dominates the town of Akhaltsikhe and reflects the many cultures and empires that have controlled this part of the country over the centuries.

Inside the huge fortified complex you'll find stone towers and battlements, landscaped gardens, courtyards, fountains and some beautifully restored interiors. One of the most striking features is the large domed mosque, a reminder of the period when the region was under Ottoman rule.

What makes Rabati particularly interesting is the mixture of architectural influences in one place — Georgian, Ottoman and other elements sitting within the same fortress walls.

We climbed up through the towers and fortifications as well, which gives some excellent views across the castle and the surrounding countryside.

After the ancient cave cities we've been exploring, this was something completely different — and another place in Georgia that turned out to be far more impressive than we expected. 🇬🇪

🇬🇪 Exploring the Cave City of Vardzia, Georgia

Today took us inside one of Georgia’s most extraordinary historical sites — Vardzia, a vast city carved directly into the mountainside.

Built largely during the reign of Queen Tamar in the 12th century, Vardzia wasn't simply a collection of caves. It developed into a remarkable fortified monastery and settlement, with hundreds of rooms, tunnels, churches, storage areas and wine cellars cut deep into the rock.

What makes it even more fascinating is that many of the rooms you can see today were originally inside the mountain. A huge earthquake in 1283 tore away part of the mountainside, exposing the chambers and passages that had previously been hidden underground.

Walking through the tiny doorways and dark interconnected rooms really gives you a sense of how people lived here more than 800 years ago.

And then you step out of the caves to views across the valley like these. 🇬🇪

Definitely one of the highlights of our journey through Georgia.

Georgia 🇬🇪 Taking time to wander through Gori beyond the famous landmarks.

After visiting the fortress and the Stalin Museum, we explored the parks, churches and quieter streets of the city. The fountains, rose gardens and mountain backdrop made it a surprisingly peaceful place to spend the afternoon.

One of the things we've loved about Georgia is the contrast—ancient churches, Soviet history and modern life all existing side by side.

Every stop on this journey has revealed something different, and that's what makes travelling here so rewarding.

Today we visited the Stalin Museum in Gori, the birthplace of one of history's most controversial figures. Georgia 🇬🇪

The museum presents the life of Joseph Stalin, while outside stands one of the few remaining statues of him. One of the most fascinating exhibits is his preserved railway carriage, used for official travel and famously taken to the Yalta Conference because Stalin preferred rail travel over flying.

Walking through the carriage, with its private cabins, meeting room and period furnishings, offered a glimpse into the life of one of the 20th century's most powerful—and feared—leaders.

Whatever your views on Stalin, it's certainly a place that makes you reflect on how one person could shape the course of history.

Standing on centuries of history at Gori Fortress. Georgia 🇬🇪

Perched high above the city, this fortress has watched over Georgia for well over a thousand years. The thick stone walls, commanding views and strategic position make it easy to see why it was fought over by so many armies throughout history.

The climb was definitely worth it—not just for the history, but for the fantastic views across Gori and the surrounding countryside.

Sno Castle – A Hidden Gem in the Caucasus 🇬🇪🏰

Today we stopped at the medieval Sno Castle, perched high on a rocky outcrop overlooking the beautiful Sno Valley. It's amazing to think this fortress has stood watch over these mountains for centuries, protecting the valley and its people.

The dramatic scenery, peaceful surroundings and rich history make this well worth a stop if you're travelling through the Kazbegi region. Georgia continues to surprise us around every corner!

Every day on this trip seems to reveal another incredible place. 🇬🇪❤️
