The lilac-breasted roller is a medium-sized bird found across sub-Saharan Africa, easily recognized by its bright lilac, blue, and green plumage. It feeds mainly on insects, small reptiles, and amphibians, often hunting from a perch. Known for its acrobatic aerial displays during courtship, it nests in tree holes or old woodpecker nests. This species is not migratory and plays a role in controlling insect populations in the savannah.

The watering hole is one of the most important gathering points in the wild, especially in dry landscapes where water is scarce. Animals of all kinds from elephants and antelope to birds and insects rely on these sources to survive, making them natural wildlife hotspots. They’re also key hunting areas for predators, as prey must come to drink, and important social spaces where herds interact, bathe, and rest.

A single water source can support entire ecosystems and offers a powerful glimpse into the balance of life in the wild.

This should be an interesting and entertaining evening. If you are in London on 21 October, why not visit the RGS and listen to Karen Paolillo talking about her life with hippos? I first met Karen in 1992 and she has been working with hippos since then, her knowledge about hippos is phenomenal. Enjoy and support.

Rhinos are powerful, ancient, and vital to Africa’s ecosystems. These incredible animals help shape landscapes by grazing, creating habitats for other species, and spreading seeds. Despite their size, rhinos are under serious threat from poaching for their horns, making conservation efforts crucial to ensure they continue roaming the wild for generations to come.

I love it when guests are buzzing from their experiences on safari with Sense Earth.

Thank you Kate for the lovely testimonial.

"My children and I have been talking about going to see the wildlife in Africa since they were little and we finally did this with Sense Earth in June 2026. So our trip really was a one off – the trip of a lifetime, and it exceeded all our expectations.

"Jenny was fantastic in arranging it in every last detail. She really listened to our individual needs and put together something that was perfect for us, with her fantastic local knowledge coming to the fore. We stayed in five different places - three in Eswatini, one near Kruger in South Africa, and one in Mozambique – and in each the accommodation was fabulous - charming, unique, and with luxurious touches.

"The best thing about the trip, however, were the wildlife encounters, the very thing we went for and which were everything we hoped for and so much more. We saw, very close up, white rhino, the very endangered and extremely rare black rhino, lions, buffalo, crocodiles, wildebeest, zebra, and many different types of antelopes. Also, incredibly, a battle between a pack of wild dogs and hyenas over an impala kill.

"The guides were all excellent, enhancing our experience with their fantastic and incredibly interesting insights and knowledge. At the end of our trip, we swam with dolphins, a magical experience I will never forget and from which we now have underwater photos showing just how close these amazing creatures came to us. In each place, it was clear that the welfare of the animals was uppermost, and that tourism was there to serve the wildlife, not the other way round.

"I can’t recommend Sense Earth highly enough."
