Corn was a major commodity being traded here from 16th - 18th century. The Market Place was the scene of lively bartering and on 26th January 1753 a confrontation spilled over into a feisty argument that led to the death of one resident from nearby Potterne village.
The tale of Ruth Pierce and her deceitfulness can be found on a plaque on the Devizes Market Cross and is a warning to all to be upright and honest!
