Corn was a major commodity being traded here from 16th - 18th century. The Market Place was the scene of lively bartering and on 26th January 1753 a confrontation spilled over into a feisty argument that led to the death of one resident from nearby Potterne village.

The tale of Ruth Pierce and her deceitfulness can be found on a plaque on the Devizes Market Cross and is a warning to all to be upright and honest!

Weekends in Devizes are for gentle strolls or, if you're so inclined, vigorous yomps across our gorgeous downland or next to the Kennet & Avon canal.

Grab provisions from our lovely indie bakeries and sandwich shops (which may also sell delicious pies and sweet goodies 😁) then relax with a picnic at the top of Roundway Hill or in Jubilee woods next to the Kennet & Avon canal, with its tempting Caen Hill
CafΓ© if you fancy something special.

Devizes Retailers and Independents can set you straight on getting your vittels and where to relax on your return to town.

Take a trip from Devizes Wharf for a canal experience on a stretch of water like no other in the country.

A total of 29 locks make an ascent through town - don't worry, you don't have to manage all those lock gates unless you hire your own boat!

Sit back, relax and enjoy a traditional supper and music, only stretching the grey matter a little if you fancy a quiz night.

Take a peek in the Devizes Wharf Museum while you're here.
