It seems The Proclaimers aren’t the only ones sending letters to America…

More than 200 years ago, letters were travelling between Strathspey and America filled with family news, local happenings, surprise marriages… and some very strong opinions about the neighbours. (Has much changed really?)

Now, those letters are helping us tell the remarkable story of Duncan Grant, a shepherd from Duthil who emigrated to America in 1803, taking three precious pieces of plaid with him.

Kept by his family for generations, the plaid has now made its way back to Strathspey from California - alongside the stories that kept Duncan connected to home.

Come along to Grantown Museum and discover the people, the plaid and the 200-year-old gossip bringing early 19th-century Strathspey back to life.

We were curious to know more about what had to offer, so they kindly invited local Grantown resident along to find out!

From Erinne’s feedback, it’s safe to say there is an abundance of adventure right on our doorstep. We’re very lucky to have this facility so close to the Grantown - both for tourists and residents alike. If you’re visiting and looking for a bit of fun, or live near by and running out of ways to entertain the kids this summer, we really think Cairngorms Activities will have you covered.

P.S. Did you know you can walk along the spey directly from Grantown? No car needed!

One of our local hills, Beinn Mhor, sits just between Grantown and Dulnain Bridge. You can walk to its summit (471m) from the town, and are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Strathspey - weather dependant!

It’s also where you will spot the ancient hillfort, Tom A’ Chaisteil (hill of the castle) of unknown age - but speculated it could be Pictish through to early Bronze Age.

A great walk out on a nice day, and of course from Beinn Mhor you really should go to the Ben Mhor Hotel. You can find routes on Walkhighlands.
