After a great Calais tour yesterday the Union Jack Club members toured Dunkirk before paying their respects at the site of the Wormhoudt massacre where around 80 British and French POWs were killed during the retreat to Dunkirk in 1940.

Today, we started following in the footsteps of Major William Ellerbe Pelham, with his son, Dr Gayle Pelham, and his granddaughter Ann's family.

On , William Ellerbe Pelham was a Captain in the 2nd Battalion, 501st PIR, and the Battalion's S-3 Operations Officer. He played a major role in the fighting at Les Droueries on D-Day and D+1.

We started at Vauquois Hill. Here lies one of World War I’s most haunting battlefields. French and German forces fought a deadly underground war here, digging tunnels and detonating massive mines that shattered the hill and destroyed the village forever. The giant craters still remain today as scars of the Great War.
