Our final stop of the day was the Monumento a Hércules – Defence of the Lines of Torres Vedras Memorial at Alhandra.

A fitting end to a fascinating day exploring the Peninsular War and the incredible defensive lines built to protect Lisbon from the French advance.

Another fantastic day of history, great company and plenty of stories along the way.

Our next stop was the impressive Forte de São Vicente, one of the key positions in the Lines of Torres Vedras.

Built from 1809 on Wellington’s orders, it formed part of the vast defensive system created to protect Lisbon from Masséna’s French army in 1810. Perched above Torres Vedras, the fort gives a real sense of just how formidable Wellington’s defences were.

Our next stop was Wellesley’s (later Wellington’s) Headquarters.

It was here that Wellesley planned and directed his campaigns against the French, making the decisions that would shape the Peninsular War.

We’ve started our Peninsular War Tour with a lovely couple from Australia.

Our first stop was Beresford’s Headquarters, a fascinating place to begin as we follow the story of the Peninsular War and the role Beresford played in shaping the Portuguese Army.

A great start to what promises to be a fantastic tour.

We visited the 93rd Bomb Group Museum, followed by a visit to the former Officers’ Club, where Mary and her husband had the opportunity to stand in a place closely connected to her father’s wartime service.

Chris then took them onto the original wartime runway, bringing the history of the airfield to life.

An excellent day, filled with history, memories and some very special moments. We hope Mary and her family return home with memories that will last a lifetime.

Our tour with Mary and her family continued with a visit to the Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum before heading on to Hardwick.

It was a particularly special part of the tour as Chris Rice brought the history to life, showing Mary and her family the original airfield map and then sharing the mission records.

Seeing these records and standing in the places connected to Mary’s family history makes these tours incredibly meaningful.

Today we’re on a very special tour with four customers, exploring the places connected to Mary’s father, who served as a navigator with a B-24 squadron in the USAAF.

He was mostly stationed at Hardwick with the 93rd Bomb Group, and today we’re retracing some of the places where he lived, worked and prepared for missions during the Second World War.

For us, battlefield touring isn’t just about dates and battles — it’s about the people behind the history and helping families connect with their own stories.

It’s a real privilege to be able to walk these paths with Mary and her family and help bring her father’s story back to life.

Our most recent tour included a trip to Bletchley Park.

Here’s Frank, their guide, and our guests, standing inside Alan Turing’s office at Bletchley Park. This was where one of Britain’s greatest minds worked during the Second World War, helping to break the German Enigma codes.

Turing’s work, alongside the wider codebreaking team, played a crucial role in the Allied war effort and changed the course of modern computing.

It’s incredible to stand in such a modest room and think about the extraordinary work that took place here — quiet, secret and hugely significant.
