Remembering our friends Dan, Pemba, Bhim and all the others who lost their lives in the flash flood in Nepal last week.

Over the last few days we've received requests from the VoluntEars community asking how they can support the families who are left behind so we've started a gofundme page to collect donations which will be sent to Nepal to help Dan's wife, Pemba's wife and 2 children. There's no pressure to get involved but if you'd like to then your help will be gratefully received.

Nepal update

3 days have now passed since the terrible flash flooding in Nepal.

It's confirmed that our colleagues and friends Dan Tamang, his son Pemba, brother Bhim Tamang and nephew Kaju were among a group of 16 Nepalese people who were in the affected area when the flooding happened.

So far only Kaju has been found alive and had been brought back to Kathmandu and we are in touch with him.

The others are still missing with no contact. This is deeply upsetting, but we still hope for a miracle.

We're in touch with their families and are looking into the best ways to support them. We will share any details on this in due course.

For now, we extend our love and hope to all those affected by this tragic event.

For everyone who's done a Nepal trip with us: you've probably seen the news about a large flash flood in the Kailash region of Nepal.

We want to update you that we are in touch with many people in Nepal about the safety of our trekking colleagues.

It seems that Dan, Pemba and Bhim were all on a trek in the region of Nepal which has been affected by the flooding (not with any VoluntEars customers or staff).

So far, nobody has received any contact from them since it happened.

We are all obviously hoping that this is because power and phone infrastructure is down they simply can't get a signal to communicate with anyone. It could take several days for them to reach a place where communication is possible.

We will update again when we get more news

This is a Moonstone mine which our Sri Lanka group visited last week. Workers take it in turns to climb down into the mine shaft, dig out mud containing stones and gravel, wash it in a nearby pond, and sift out any moonstones which are then cut, polished and set in gold and silver rings, bracelets and necklaces to be sold in Sri Lanka or exported abroad. They are very skilled people who work here. All the information was interpreted into BSL for our group

All the way back in summer 2016 one of our groups painted this mural on an outside wall at a deaf school in Sri Lanka. It's lasted remarkably well considering it's now 10 years old! But it was starting to loose its colour & vibrancy so last week some of our group stayed at school and gave it a gentle makeover - brighter colours, new black lines to give more definition - and it now looks fantastic again! Well done team 🤗

Today in Sri Lanka - a river safari by boat, visited an island where they make cinnamon, saw people making masks used in traditional dancing shows, learnt how they mine for moon stones, and ended the day by the sea in Hikkaduwa. We did a lot today!!
