🔍 10 Secret Facts About Inverness You Won’t Find in a Guidebook 📖

How many did you know?

1️⃣ The River Ness Once Had a Floating Bridge 🌉 – Before modern bridges, Inverness had a floating wooden bridge that was hauled across the river by chains! It was a slow and wobbly way to cross, but it worked—until strong currents eventually made it obsolete.

2️⃣ A Mysterious Vanishing Castle 🏰 – Did you know there was once a castle older than the current Inverness Castle? It was blown up by Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army in 1746 to prevent it from falling into British hands. Almost nothing remains today!

3️⃣ A Church with a Bullet Hole from the Jacobite Rebellion ⛪ – The Old High Church in Inverness is the site where captured Jacobite soldiers were executed after the Battle of Culloden. You can still see a bullet hole in the church walls—chilling history right in the city center!

4️⃣ Inverness Had an Underground River! 🌊 – Hidden beneath Academy Street, there was once a small underground waterway called the Tarry Sluice. It was covered over in the 19th century, but its tunnels may still exist beneath the city’s streets.

5️⃣ Loch Ness Froze Over Once—and It Was Deadly ❄️ – Loch Ness is so deep and constantly moving that it almost never freezes. But in the extreme winter of 1895, it froze solid. Locals tried to walk across it, and at least one person tragically fell through the ice.

6️⃣ The Highland Clans Held Secret Meetings in a Cave Near Inverness 🏔️ – During times of war and rebellion, Highland clan leaders met in a hidden cave near Dores, just outside Inverness, to plan attacks and outmaneuver British forces. The exact location is still debated by historians.

7️⃣ The Town Once Had a “Monster Killer” in Residence 🦕⚔️ – In the 1930s, a famous big-game hunter, Marmaduke Wetherell, came to Inverness to hunt and kill the Loch Ness Monster. He didn’t find Nessie, but he did fake one of the most famous hoax photos of all time!

8️⃣ Inverness’s First Telephone Call Was Between a Whisky Distillery and a Pub 📞🥃 – When telephones first arrived in the city, one of the first calls ever made was between a whisky distillery and a local pub. Priorities!

9️⃣ A King of Scotland Was Murdered Here (in His Own Bed!) 👑💀 – King Duncan I (yes, the same one from Macbeth) was assassinated in 1040 near Inverness, likely by his own men. Shakespeare took some creative liberties, but the real story is just as dark.

🔟 There’s a Hidden Viking Burial Ground Under a Car Park ⚔️🚗 – In the 1980s, archaeologists found evidence of a Viking warrior’s burial site under what is now a parking lot in Inverness. No full excavation was done, meaning Viking remains could still be there today!
