A magical moment on the water

These striking birds are Slavonian grebes — a real treat to spot and one of the Cairngorms’ most special summer visitors.

Their elaborate head plumes and vibrant colouring are unmistakable (and pretty fabulous, we think). If you’re lucky, you might catch their beautiful courtship display during your stay.

This is us — Gavin, Elspeth, and our four-legged sidekick, Bramble. We live here at Loch Garten Lodges, and we’re the ones who make sure your stay goes smoothly.

From checking you in to keeping the place shipshape (and sharing our favourite walks), we’re here when you need us — and quietly in the background when you don’t.

We bought the site after years of visiting as guests ourselves, so we know exactly how special this place is.

Last night, our team responded to a fire in the Garten Woods section of the reserve.

Thanks to the swift response from SFRS, a local farmer, and our own team, the fire was quickly contained and extinguished. Our team then remained on site overnight to ensure it was fully out.

The fire affected an area of approximately 200 square metres. While we can't say for certain, it's likely it was caused by a discarded cigarette.

A huge thank you to everyone who responded so quickly, and a reminder to all visitors, please do not light fires or BBQs, always make sure ci******es are fully extinguished, and take all litter, including glass, away with you.

The red damselflies are out, glinting in the sunshine and clinging to warm tree bark and stones.

Tiny, delicate, and surprisingly bold in colour — the red damselfly is a regular visitor in and around the forest paths near our lodges.

Thank you to Lesley Tonks for this fantastic close-up taken during her stay – a great reminder to slow down and look a little closer when you're out on a walk.
