🦔 Did you see the Daily Mail article blaming badgers for Britain's declining hedgehog population? 🦡

The Daily Mail recently claimed that badgers are "the real reason" Britain's hedgehogs are disappearing. But the evidence tells a very different story.

Yes, badgers sometimes prey on hedgehogs. That's nature. But leading hedgehog conservation organisations agree that badgers are not the primary cause of hedgehog decline.

🌿 Habitat loss and fragmentation
🚜 Intensive farming and pesticide use
🚗 Roads and development
🌱 Loss of food, shelter and safe spaces

Badgers and hedgehogs have coexisted in Britain for hundreds of thousands of years. So why are we blaming one native species for the damage humans are doing to their shared home?

We're calling on the Daily Mail to correct its misleading claims and take responsibility for its reporting.

Lynx UK Trust wanted three lynx to be released into Kielder Forest in Northumberland on a trial basis. Natural England refused, saying that such a release was prohibited by the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 - despite lynx once being native mammals in the UK. Hunting and habitat loss made them extinct here.

So Lynx UK took legal action against Natural England for refusing to carry out a full assessment of the proposed release. But a judge just threw out the challenge, meaning no lynx will be released into the wild while current legislation remains as it is.

As the last of autumn fades and the darker days draw in, Samhain marks a threshold in the year 🍂

For generations, communities prepared for winter through customs closely tied to the land around them. Turnips were carved into lanterns, hazelnuts burned to divine future relationships, and kale stalks pulled from the earth to tell fortunes.

These traditions offer a glimpse of how closely nature, folklore and everyday life were once intertwined.

As October gives way to November, it feels like a fitting moment to remember that connection.
