Legend has it that Cawdor Castle was built where a donkey carrying gold lay down to rest beneath a holly tree.

The story says the Thane of Cawdor was instructed to load his donkey with treasure and build his home wherever the animal chose to stop. When the donkey settled beneath a holly tree, the castle was built on that very spot.

Even more fascinating, the remains of the ancient holly tree can still be seen inside the castle today! 🌿
