Camp in the hay is not a slogan. It is what the field at Holme-next-the-Sea, North Norfolk, UK actually looks like in late summer.

You put the tent in the meadow. Peddars Way is at the gate. Holme Beach is a walk, not a project. The White Horse is around the corner when you want a pint that was not cooked on a stove you packed yourself.

I spent five years getting this site open. High Court. Council conversations I would rather not repeat. The bit I did not expect was how quiet it goes after tea, when the hay holds the last of the heat and the dogs stop pretending they have anywhere else to be.

See you in the hay.

I used to think a cottage break was just a bigger version of a B&B night.

Then I watched a family arrive at The Old Barn near Hunstanton, North Norfolk, UK with bags, a dog, and that look people get when they have been holding the week together with string. Twenty minutes later the kettle was on. The garden chairs were out. Nobody was performing holiday any more.

Thick walls. A door that closes. Private garden. The Coast Path close enough that the dog starts pacing when you pick up the lead. That is the whole product. Not luxury. Just enough room that you can stop organising everyone and start being there.

Friday on the North Norfolk, UK coast is heavy rain at Holme, 11 to 20. That is a hut day. Saturday is sunny. Sunday warms up to 23 with sunny intervals.

Hunstanton high tides BST: Fri 11:29, Sat 12:45, Sun 14:27. Knot season is starting. I do not guess the wader clock. Check RSPB Snettisham, then walk the Coast Path when you are done.

Rain on the roof Friday. Beach and birds after. A handful of nights still open this side of mid-September.

Some people come to North Norfolk, UK for the beach. Fair enough.

Some of us come for the bit where a flat-bottom Norfolk wherry slides into a salt marsh creek and the world goes quiet in a way no spa menu has ever managed. About four hours. Wells harbour start. Tea or c***r on the bank. Dogs welcome. No experience required. You are not racing anything.

This is exactly the sort of activity we mean when we say base for Norfolk. You sleep somewhere sensible near Hunstanton, Holme or Holt. You go and do the thing that stays in your head for months. Coastal Exploration Company run the proper traditional boats out of Wells. We just try to put you within easy reach of them.

Have you ever done a day on the water that reset your week more than a weekend indoors ever could.

Not going to oversell it, but the gaps are going. Check now.

September does something to the North Norfolk, UK coast that August never quite manages.

The light goes lower. The beaches thin out without anyone announcing it. You can walk Holme at seven in the evening and feel like the sand is still deciding who it belongs to. The first proper knot flocks start building on The Wash. The air has that edge that makes a campfire feel earned rather than decorative.

I am not mourning summer. I am just saying the first two weeks of September are when a lot of our best stays happen, and almost nobody plans for them until they are already gone.

Bank holiday is done. School nights creep back in. That is exactly when the coast gets interesting again if you still want a short break before autumn writes its own rules.

There are still a few dates showing for this summer. Worth checking tonight.
