From 6am on Friday 18 September 2026, drivers will begin using a new section of the A417 Missing Link.

🚧 Major milestone for the A417 Missing Link scheme in Gloucestershire 🚧

From 6am on Friday 18 September 2026, drivers will begin using a new section of the A417 Missing Link, marking a significant step forward in the upgrade between Gloucester and Cirencester.

✅ Traffic will move onto the new permanent road layout for journeys between Gloucester, Cirencester, Cheltenham and Oxford.

⚠️ Please note: the traffic switch date may change due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Any updates will be shared on the National Highways website and via email updates.

What’s changing?
🚗 Drivers travelling between Gloucester and Cirencester will continue directly along the new A417, with the Air Balloon roundabout removed from the route.
🚗 Motorists travelling from Cheltenham and Oxford towards Gloucester will need to use the new A436 to reach Shab Hill junction before joining the northbound route towards Gloucester.
Improving journeys

While there may be some initial delays as drivers adjust to the new layout, the changes are expected to improve journey times and reliability along this important route. Single-lane traffic management will remain in place while further works are completed.
