Perched high above the Yorkshire coast, Whitby Abbey is one of the UK’s most impressive landmarks and a sight that never gets old.

The dramatic ruins date back centuries, with the first monastery on the site founded in 657 AD! The Abbey you see today was built from the 13th century onwards and its striking gothic ruins have become one of Yorkshire’s most recognisable spots. 🌿🤎

Climb the famous 199 steps from the old town and you’ll be rewarded with views across Whitby, the harbour and the North Sea. You can then walk to the Abbey, or there is parking at the top available if you don’t fancy the big walk!

🌿 The Estate spans 30,000 acres of moorland, woodland and countryside

🏰 It is historically a priory, even though it’s named ‘Bolton Abbey’. This name actually refers to the surrounding village!

🌊 There are 62 famous stepping stones across the River Wharfe to make your way to Bolton Abbey

👑 Lady Alice de Romille of Skipton Castle gave the land to the canons in 1154 after they moved from nearby Embsay
