⏳On This Day...⏳

82 years ago, on the 6th June 1944, the Allied Powers (consisting mainly of the UK, USA and Canada, but many more were involved) invaded the beaches of Normandy, resulting in the liberation of France, and the eventual Allied victory on the Western Front.

This was code named Operation Overlord, but is of course more commonly known as D-Day. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history with over 156,000 soldiers and 195,700 naval personnel involved.
The Royal Liver Friendly Society had over 2000 members join the war effort in WWII, unfortunately 75 of these men did lose their lives.
And to honour all those who fought in the war the Royal Liver Friendly Society set up electronic chimes that go off every 15 minutes in sync with our clocks, and still do to this day!

Join us today in thinking about and honouring the people who lost their lives for our country. Lest We Forget

🔤Royal Liver Building A-Z 🔤

To tell you all about the building and its surrounding areas from A to Z!
Starting with the Architecture! 🏛️

Designed by Birkenhead man Walter Aubrey Thomas, this grand building was built between 1908 and 1911 and as you might have noticed the Royal Liver Building is mostly symmetrical.
Only a few features aren't, one being the clocks on the West Tower vs the East Tower, the West has 3 and the East only has 1! And then all the doorways into the building are all slightly different but there is a door on all 4 sides!

The building is 322ft tall (98 metres) and has 15 storeys (we go up to the 15th floor on our Tour) There are 13 main storeys that all provide views of the city and the River Mersey and from -1 up to the 9th floor are where all the offices and different business' work.

Inspired by the Ingalls building in Cincinnati, the Royal Liver Building was the first building in England to use the Hennebique principal (reinforced concrete) and because of this the Royal Liver Building doesn't actually have a distinct style but does have some references to Baroque and Byzantine!

Can you think of any other 'A's that the Royal Liver Building is connected to? 🤔

You can learn more about the building on one of our tours, just click the link

In June of 1916, now 110 years ago...⏳

Several offices moved into the, still under construction, Cunard Building, depsite the Cunard building being officially finished in 1917. They weren't able to have a grand opening due to the Great War.
The Cunard is the youngest of the Three Graces, with the Port of Liverpool Building opened in 1907 and the Royal Liver Building (of course) opened in 1911.
But together we stand proud as iconic symbols of the City.

🐦‍⬛Liver Bird of the month 🐦‍⬛

The Mersey Chambers Liver Bird.

Often nicknamed the 'Third Liver Bird' because of its likeness to the Liver Birds on top of the Royal Liver Building. But as you've see there are so many more Liver Birds than just these three!

There's also a myth that this bird is actual the mother bird Bertie and Bella and that is also why she faces them! She does predate them by 40 years as this Liver Bird was built in 1870 and has been sat on top of the Mersey Chambers since that was built in 1878!
