Now this really is a birds eye view!

Whilst we do get as close to our Liver Birds as possible, it's not quite this close!

This photo was taken when our iconic Bertie and Bella were assembled on top of the Royal Liver Building, although you might not have thought this was a construction site from the look of that hat! 🤠

You can see clearly here just how many pieces of copper make up these 18ft tall, 4 tonne birds. It would not have been an easy job to get them 300 ft in the air 🐦‍⬛

To tell you all about the building and its surrounding areas from A to Z!

How are we already at W!! 🤯
And considering we already spoke about Walter Aubrey Thomas, the Building's architect way back on week 1. We'll use this time to talk about the Wars, namely, WWI and WWII.

These are our most frequently asked questions about the Royal Liver Building during those war years!
Were the Liver Birds taken down?
No! They were welded ontop of the building when they were constructed and therefore would be a big job to try and take down, and whilst we do love them, they had more to think about than some copper birds! They have actually never left their post 😍

Was the Royal Liver Building damaged during the Liverpool Blitz?
No! Whilst Liverpool was the most bombed city outside of London, we were thankfully never bombed, they most likely used our towers as a landmark to know where they were in the city in relation to the docks.

Can you believe this magazine edition is now 70 years old! 🤯

This is just one of three Meccano Magazines that the Royal Liver Building graces the front cover of! Each one showcasing a different side of Liverpool, just like this one with a very dirty Royal Liver Building and the Liverpool Overhead Railway.

Meccano, just like the Royal Liver Building, was founded in Liverpool! Created by Frank Hornby & David Elliott, who loaned Frank £5 to patent his invention in 1901!
We're very lucky to have our own editions of these magazines too!

Last Day of the River of Light 2026

And we've loved it!

It might have started off a bit rocky with those lovely storms, but it has definitely redeemed itself!
This is always a great week for Liverpool, seeing everybody come out and look at these incredible structures year after year 🤩
Our favourite was definitely the Flower Power installation 🪩
We're already counting down the days until next years!

🐦‍⬛Liver Bird of the month 🐦‍⬛

The Spirit of Liverpool - If you feel like you're getting deja vu, don't worry! There are two Spirit of Liverpools!
This one is located on the top of the Walker Art Gallery😍

This is what we mean when we say the Liver Birds are a lot older than our Bella and Bertie!
The original was built in 1870 by John Warrington Wood, and his aim was to create a personification of Liverpool using many symbols of the city.

'She is sitting on a bale of cotton that portrays Liverpool’s trade and industry. A Liver bird, a fictional bird that is a symbol of Liverpool, is sitting by her left arm and in her left hand she is holding a steamship propeller. In her right hand she is holding a trident. Both the trident and the propeller are symbols of domination over the sea. At her feet is a painter’s palette, a compass and a setsquare' - National Musuems of Liverpool 🤩

The original, made of white marble, was starting to decay and actually become quite dangerous with the marble falling off the roof of the gallery! So in October 1993 the Spirit of Liverpool was taken down, taking less than an hour and a crane! A stark contrast to getting it on top of the building, that took around 5000 man hours over the course of three days!

The replica, made of chinese marble, was created using a 42 ton block of marble before being carved and chiselled with only 12 tons remaining!
Some might not even know there was a Liver Bird here, when in fact there has been two, maybe this bird is an older cousin to Bella and Bertie!

Liverpool has changed a lot!

The top picture shows Liverpool back in the 1930s, and if you can't tell, the bottom picture is a lot more modern! Taken in 2025!📸

This shows just how much Liverpool has grown and evolved over those 95 years.🤯
But standing tall throughout, of course, are the Three Graces and the Albion House!
The Albion House, formerly the White Star Line offices, is slightly hidden in that top picture but in the modern photo it very much has pride of place on the Strand 🥰
