Yesterday saw the start of the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool 🥊

The inaugural event takes place at the M&S Bank Arena. It will feature more than 500 boxers from over 60 countries and will be the biggest Olympic-style boxing event to take place in the UK since the 2012 games.

Did you know that 4 clocks on the Royal Liver Building used to be controlled by a Master mechanism that would ensure they were all showing the same time using electrical pulses?

Nowadays there isn't a Master, but hidden in the clocktower is this ceremonial mechanism that may well be the one that was used on the 22nd June 1911 at 1.40pm when the clocks were started!

If you've been along the Waterfront recently then I'm sure you've noticed the B.A.P. Unión. The Peruvian Navy vessel is the second largest tall ship in the world! 🌍

She has been on a six month voyage, stopping at USA, London, Aberdeen, Denmark, Germany and Amsterdam and will soon be moving on to Dublin ⛵

The visit is, in part, a celebration of Wirral's links with Peru, as Peruvian naval hero Admiral Grau’s ship, the Huáscar, was built in 1866 at Cammell Laird, Birkenhead.

Although she is due to depart today, the B.A.P. Unión has been great to look at from our 10th floor viewing platform. Thanks to our tour guide, Jacob, for this snap! 📸

We’re down in Woolwich at UKinbound Inspire but had to take a trip to see an old friend…the Royal Iris.

It’s such a terrible end for a piece of Liverpool’s history and a shame she was never restored to her former glory.

You can still just see the name visible at the rear 😔

Sure she holds many memories for the people of the city too!

We love to showcase local suppliers we work with, so first up we have The Jones Boys.

Specialising in ‘Sunbursts and bendy shapes’, Andy and Phillip use lots of vibrant colours in their prints.

Originally from Prescot, twins Andrew and Philip have spread their wings. Andrew has settled by the Sea in Crosby, where they have their main studio and workshop. Andrew a commercial illustrator, graphic designer and lecturer and has been working freelance nearly 20 years, Philip, now based in Lancaster, specialises in scientific and medical illustration and his work in this area has been widely published. Andrew and Philip began collaborating as the Jones Boys in 2015.

As well as stocking some of their work in our shop, Andy and Phil also created our bespoke labels for our Gin collection as well as our Bella & Bertie greetings cards.

The image below from 1907 shows the vision of John Alexander Brodie to redevelop the infilled George's Dock site with the vision it could become the focus for the commercial regeneration of the city.

The sketch shows 3 icon buildings with the Pier Head at the front and public buildings either side.
Looking at the sketch alongside the view today its amazing to think how close that image from 118 years ago is!

Did you know the John Alexander Brodie, who was the City Engineer for Liverpool responsible for setting the vision for the Pier Head redevelopment not to mention designing the Queensway Tunnel also invented the nets used on football goals in 1889? ⚽

This is said to be the invention he is most proud of.

Mersey tunnel or nets for goals....its a close call which one is more important for the city 😉 🔵🔴

Happy Birthday, Liverpool! 🎉

On the 28th of August, 1207, King John decided to make Liverpool an official town by giving it a Royal Charter.

Before having a Charter, everything in Liverpool belonged to the King. The Charter gave the local people more freedom in buying and selling things. The population at the time was about 1,000 people, mainly concentrated around a small area of seven streets.

This makes the beautiful city of Liverpool 818 years old today. 🎂
