There is a particular calibration to Passalacqua. The kind where nothing announces itself, but everything is already in its place. You arrive to a villa, not a hotel: the bag taken without a word, the cardinal who built it in 1787 still somehow in the air.

Three terraces drop toward Como — camellia, then cypress, then water — and the day rearranges itself around them.
