Sri Lanka: Temples, Tea Hills & Elephants 🐘

Wonderful news for those dreaming of the Pearl of the Indian Ocean - Sri Lanka is now offering a free Tourist ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) for travellers from selected countries, including the UK and US, from 25th May 2026. There has never been a better moment to go.

Picture yourself drifting through mist-wrapped tea hills, their emerald terraces cascading into the valleys below. Explore the extraordinary cave temples of Dambulla, adorned with centuries of Buddhist art, and stand in awe before Sigiriya - the ancient lion-shaped rock fortress that rises dramatically from the jungle floor, one of Asia's most breathtaking sights.

In the island's magnificent national parks, elephants roam freely between shimmering lakes whilst colourful birdlife fills the canopy above. Timeless, unhurried, and utterly captivating.

Journey by scenic train through rolling plantations, lose yourself in the cobblestoned colonial streets of Galle Fort, and ease into the gentle rhythm of the sun-drenched southwest coast, cocktail in hand, waves lapping at the shore.

Sri Lanka rewards every sense. Let us tailor your perfect journey there. πŸŒΏπŸ›οΈπŸŒŠ

🌍 Today is World Environment Day. A moment to pause, reflect, and ask ourselves: what kind of traveller do we choose to be?

Across the wild places we love most, the pressures are real. Elephant corridors are shrinking. The iconic wildebeest migration faces increasing uncertainty. Tigers, leopards, and endemic birds are losing habitat at a pace that should give us all reason to stop and think.

At Somak Luxury Travel, responsible travel is not a trend or a tagline. It is the foundation of every journey we create.

We work with properties that hold genuine sustainability credentials, from solar-powered camps to lodges that employ and uplift local communities.

We support initiatives including the Mara Rianda Charitable Trust and the East Africa Character Development Trust, because conservation depends on people, not just landscapes.

When you travel with us to Kenya, Tanzania, India, Sri Lanka, or beyond, you are not simply a visitor. You are part of the reason wild places remain wild.

This World Environment Day, we invite you to travel with intention. To choose experiences that give back. To leave the places you love a little better than you found them.

The world's wild wonders are waiting. Let's make sure they always will be. πŸ˜πŸ¦πŸ†

Happy

There are game drives. And then there is this.

Drifting silently above the Maasai Mara at first light, the plains stretching endlessly below, the only sound the occasional roar of the burner overhead. Elephants moving through the golden grass. A lion pride stirring in the early morning sun. The Great Rift Valley waking up beneath your feet.

A hot air balloon flight over East Africa is one of those rare experiences that genuinely lives up to every expectation. No roads. No vehicles. Just you, the sky and one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on the planet.

And when you land? A full bush breakfast with a glass of something cold and celebratory, right there on the open plains.

We build hot air balloon experiences into a number of our Kenya and Tanzania safari itineraries, and for good reason. Once you have seen the Mara from the air, it is very difficult to see it any other way.

πŸŒ… Could this be part of your next safari? Drop us a message or call the team and we will make it happen.

🍳 The Safari Moment Nobody Tells You About

Everyone talks about the game drives. The sundowners. The moment a lion walks past the vehicle close enough to hear it breathe.

But ask anyone who has been on safari what they remember most unexpectedly, and somewhere near the top of the list sits the bush breakfast.

Picture this. You are an hour into your dawn game drive. The light is still golden and low, throwing long shadows across the grass. Your guide has just tracked a cheetah scanning the plains ahead. And then he pulls over beneath a solitary acacia, where camp staff have quietly laid a table in the middle of nowhere, with linen, fresh coffee, eggs cooked to order and fruit, with nothing between you and the horizon in any direction.

A herd of elephants moves through the trees a few hundred metres away. A hippo surfaces on the river bend below. Somewhere in the distance, a lion calls.

This is a bush breakfast. And it is one of those rare travel experiences that genuinely lives up to every expectation.

In the Maasai Mara, you eat with the sound of the Mara River below you. In the Serengeti during the Great Migration, a table set on the open plains places you at the centre of the greatest wildlife spectacle on earth. In Botswana's Okavango Delta, you arrive by mokoro through reed-fringed waterways in a stillness that feels almost meditative.

For couples, it is one of those shared moments that needs no planning beyond showing up. For families, it is the story your children will still be telling decades from now.

We have just written about why we think a bush breakfast belongs on every safari itinerary, and how to make sure yours is everything it should be.

What truly makes or breaks a safari?

It is not only the lodge, the wildlife, or even the destination itself. It is the person guiding you through it.

A remarkable driver-guide transforms a trip into something unforgettable.

They anticipate movement in the grass before you see it. They understand animal behaviour, read the landscape with instinct, and share stories that give meaning to every sighting. With the right guide, every moment feels curated, considered, and deeply personal.

At Somak Luxury Travel, our professional in-house driver-guides are certified experts, refined storytellers, and your trusted connection to the places we love most.

Many are multilingual, ensuring seamless communication and effortless comfort throughout your journey.

Travel with complete confidence in our own fleet of meticulously maintained safari vehicles, led by experts who bring insight, care, and quiet excellence to every mile.

If you have experienced a safari with one of our driver-guides, we would love to hear about it.

And if you are ready to plan your own unforgettable journey, begin by emailing [email protected] and let us craft something extraordinary for you.

🌍 11 Nights | Kenya Baby Cheetah Safari & Mauritius Island Escape From £4,399 per person

Two worlds. One unforgettable journey. Wild Africa followed by seven days of pure island bliss in the Indian Ocean. This is the kind of trip that stays with you.

KENYA | THE SAFARI CHAPTER 🦁
It begins on the shores of Lake Nakuru, where flamingos paint the water pink and buffalo, hippos and rhinos roam freely. One night at Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge on Full Board eases you gently into the bush, with sunrise and sunset game drives setting the tone.

Then the Maasai Mara calls. Two nights at Sarova Mara Game Camp on Full Board places you right in the heart of one of nature's greatest spectacles. September means the Great Wildebeest Migration is in full flow. Herds thundering across the open plains. Lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants and giraffes. Twice-daily game drives in 4x4 vehicles. Front-row seats to the wild.

Wake before dawn for an optional hot air balloon flight drifting silently above the Mara, followed by a bubbly bush breakfast on the plains.

Your final safari night is spent in Nairobi at the legendary Sarova Stanley Hotel, a colonial landmark welcoming guests since 1902. The evening ends at the iconic Carnivore Restaurant, where meats are carved tableside over open flames. A proper Kenyan send-off.

MAURITIUS | THE ISLAND CHAPTER 🌊

Then the rhythm changes entirely. Seven all-inclusive nights at Zilwa Attitude on the sun-drenched northwest coast at Trou-aux-Biches. Pale sand, a turquoise lagoon and the easy warmth of true Mauritian hospitality. Creole flavours, Sega rhythms and slow, glorious days that make a week feel like a fortnight.
Kayak the lagoon. Explore by glass-bottom boat. Join a yoga session at sunrise. Or simply do absolutely nothing at all.
