🎃Here’s the surprising part!

Pumpkins weren’t the original Halloween lanterns.
The tradition goes back to Ireland and Scotland, where people carved ‘turnips’ and other root vegetables into lanterns as part of Halloween traditions. 👻

When Irish and Scottish immigrants brought these traditions to North America, pumpkins became the go-to choice because they were larger, more widely available and much easier to carve.

Over time, the carved pumpkin — or jack-o’-lantern — became one of the most recognisable symbols of Halloween. 🎃

So the next time you carve a pumpkin, remember: the tradition started with a much less glamorous vegetable. 😄
