Sykes Lodge warmly welcomes dogs and their owners to share some incredible ‘walkies’. We enjoyed a beautiful stroll by the river Derwent at Menethorpe this weekend, just 2 miles from the house and 3 miles from Malton in the Howardian Hills Area of outstanding Natural Beauty, you will be hard pressed to find more breathtaking and peaceful scenery that has changed so little over the centuries. Like a scene from a Thomas Hardy novel it is easy to escape the pressures of the 21st century and just breath in the perfection of God’s Own County.

This superb venue for a relaxing break in God’s own county just 25 minutes North of York has got to be one of the most friendly and peaceful places left on the planet. The gardens at Sykes Lodge are at the peak of their spring beauty this week. The sunshine and blue skies make it a pleasure to work among the flowers. It’s important to take 5 minutes to enjoy the creation before we handover this loveliness to our guests.

We decided to have our own version of 'Winter Watch' at Sykes Lodge this weekend doing some housekeeping for our feathered friends who call the Park at Eddlethorpe Grange Farm and Sykes Lodge 'home'. The recent heavy winds have dislodged some of our many bird boxes so we took the opportunity to check them over and give them an additional clean as already they are being checked over by future occupants. Happily, all the boxes have been used and an early morning or evening walk with a pair of field glasses is a great way to see the activity among the trees.

We also have numerous hides for small animals and there were distinct trails between hedges, piles of sticks and old vegetation. It is great to see the return of the hedgehogs in small numbers even though they are nowhere near the population that flourished around the old stack yard.

Birdlife abounds our small corner of God's own County and two relative newcomers circled over our heads this afternoon; the male Red Kite that has made the farm his hunting ground for the last year appears to have found himself a wife! They came down so low we could clearly see their heads looking down at us! By my reconing, they are the 37th bird species we have spotted on the farm in the last 12 months. To spot most of them you can actually keep warm inside Sykes Lodge and see them through the many glazed former barn openings. Just remember to pack your field glasses!

The period after Christmas and New Year celebrations is always incredibly busy for holiday let hosts and owners. In just a couple of weeks the festive decorations are taken down, rooms freshly painted, chimneys swept, PAT testing and fire risk assessments completed for the new year ahead. With all jobs ticked off the list and the very first sign of spring emerging in the park, we are ready to open the gates this afternoon to our first guests of 2026 and their 4 dogs for a week exploring the fabulous countryside around Sykes Lodge. I wonder how many of the walks recommended by Walking the Wolds they will be able to complete .... and how many cakes along the way will break some New Year resolutions!

The indescribable beauty of the morning on fresh fallen snow at Sykes Lodge. The views from the park are inspiration enough to pick up the dog lead, put on the hiking boots and walk across this landscape which is my privilege to call home and an honour to share with our guests.
