Iceland doesn’t have one Santa, it has thirteen, and they’re all a bit naughty. 🎅

The Yule Lads come down from the mountains one at a time in the 13 nights before Christmas, starting around 12th December. Children leave a shoe on the windowsill and wake up to a small gift, unless they’ve been bad, in which case they get a rotten potato. Each lad has his own habit. One tries to milk sheep and fails, another peeks through windows hoping to steal something. 🥔

It’s one of the best reasons to spend December in Iceland.

In 2010, a volcano hiding under a glacier in south Iceland erupted and grounded flights across Europe for almost a week. 🌋

Eyjafjallajökull sits beneath an ice cap, so when it erupted, the heat melted ice and threw ash high into the sky. More than 100,000 flights were cancelled and millions of passengers were stranded. Today it’s quiet, and you can see it from the south coast road and from Hotel Ranga, where it fills the view across the river.

It’s fire sitting right under ice, which is pretty much Iceland in one picture.

You might have never heard of Kirkjufell, but you’ve almost certainly seen it. It’s the mountain from Game of Thrones, Arrowhead Mountain, on the north coast of Snæfellsnes. 🏔️

The name means “Church Mountain” and it stands at 463 metres, with a small waterfall called Kirkjufellsfoss right in front of it. That’s the famous shot, mountain behind, water running in the foreground. It’s about two and a half hours from Reykjavík, so it’s an easy day trip, and it’s one of the most photographed spots in the whole country.

It’s also a favourite spot for northern lights photos once the nights draw in.

This Friday, Yoko Ono's Imagine Peace Tower lights up off the coast of Reykjavík for another year. 🕊️

It sits on the little island of Viðey and switches on every year on John Lennon's birthday, the 9th of October, then shines a beam of light straight up into the night sky until the 8th of December, the day he died. You can see it from across the city, and you can take a boat out to the island if you want to see it up close.

It's one of those things in Iceland most people have never heard of until they're standing there looking at it.

Icelandic horses have been on the island since the Vikings brought them over in the 9th century, and no new horses have been allowed in since. 🐴

That isolation is actually the whole point, it's kept the breed pure and free of disease, which is also why a horse that leaves Iceland is never allowed back in. They've got an extra gait too, called the tölt, so smooth to ride that some people say it feels like gliding rather than trotting.

Riding tours are easy to add onto pretty much any trip if you fancy trying it yourself.

Yes, this is a real hotel you can stay in, and it's only an hour from Reykjavík. 🌌

Hotel Ranga has a button in every room that calls you the second the northern lights show up, any hour of the night. It sits right by the Ranga river with views of Eyjafjallajökull, and between the outdoor hot tubs and their own observatory with proper telescopes, it might be the best base in Iceland for actually catching the lights rather than just hoping.

We've built it into a few different breaks, Golden Circle, South Iceland, glacier hikes, whatever you fancy alongside it.

Icebergs break off the glacier here, float across the lagoon, then wash up on the black sand beach next to it and just sit there sparkling. 🧊

Jökulsárlón is one of the most photographed spots in Iceland, and once you see it you get why. Seals swim between the icebergs, boats take you out onto the water for a closer look, and the beach right next to it, nicknamed Diamond Beach, is covered in chunks of ice against black sand.

The nights are finally dark enough again, and the northern lights are back. 🌌

After a summer of nonstop daylight, Iceland's skies are properly dark by evening again, which means the aurora's visible for the first time since spring. Early season sightings can be some of the best too with clear autumn nights offering less cloud than deep winter.

We've got northern lights breaks running from now through the season, from short city trips to full aurora-hunting weeks. 💚

Not everyone wants a Christmas at home this year, some people would rather be out chasing the northern lights instead. ❄️

We run a small escorted tour that takes you into the Icelandic countryside for Christmas itself, proper snowy landscapes, traditional Icelandic Christmas food, and a good shot at the lights overhead most nights. It's a completely different way to spend the 25th.

Spaces are limited since it's a small group, worth booking sooner rather than later if it's calling to you. 🎄
