What an amazing couple of weeks hosting our first ever paddlesports retreats with East of England Paddlesports 🛶

Based at Villa Miela, our guests got out every day to enjoy, paddle and explore different parts of Lake Skadar, including beautiful rivers and hidden channels, all full of wildlife.🌿

And because no adventure holiday is complete without trying something new and exciting, they also took on white water packrafting on the Cijevna river. What a day, captured in these gorgeous pics from our local partners! ✨

What a brilliant few days exploring Montenegro from the water with the East of England Paddlesports Society. 🛶

Paddleboarding, whitewater packrafting, kayaking across vast Lake Skadar, Europe's newest UNESCO Biosphere Reserve - this crew packed so much in. As always, we got everyone up close to some awesome wildlife and waterbirds along the way: Dalmatian pelicans, herons, a terrapin, and a gorgeous blue-billed Squacco heron. 🐦

One of the things we love most about these trips is the unexpected moments that often become the best bits: mastering a new paddling skill, falling in love with a hidden nature spot, realising you can jump from a 4-metre bridge and want to do it aain, just for the thrill.

Thank you East of England Paddlesports and Oli Jordan - fantastic group, fantastic week, with showing yet again why it's the perfect place to stay, with so many different adventures on the water within easy reach.

🎉 Wonderful news – Lake Skadar (Shkodër) has just become a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Montenegro 🇲🇪 and Albania 🇦🇱.

This extraordinary landscape is one of Europe's most important wetland ecosystems, and the place that inspired everything we do.

What makes this achievement even more special is that it shows how nature protection can be done right. For years, there were threats from inappropriate development, including plans for a luxury tourist resort on pristine shores and waters. Now strictly protected.

We're thrilled to see this remarkable wetland receive the recognition and protection it deserves. 🙌🏽

Congratulations to Montenegro and Albania, and especially NGO EnvPro and the cross-border team who helped make this happen.

We've been sharing Lake Skadar (or Shkodër in Albania) responsibly with tourists for 16 years. This news makes us prouder than ever to call it part of our story.

Sometimes the most unlikely of places makes for the BEST family holiday. 👀🇲🇪

Kayaking across Lake Skadar, helping wild tortoises cross the road, exploring hidden corners, swimming and jumping, laughing, making new friends, playing some games and just having an amazing time. That's how last week's school break went down on our active family retreat at . 🌿☀️

Big thanks to Wonderways for sending 13 adventurous Belgians our way for a week exploring Lake Skadar 🇲🇪

Cold-water swims, river hikes, bonfire nights, homemade food and honey from the Dajković family – this crew threw themselves into the experience with big smiles and team spirit from day one.

A few guests even conquered their fears, stepping well outside their comfort zones on activities like canyoning. What a way to get to know Montenegro. 💪

Happy 20th birthday Montenegro! 🇲🇪

Today marks the 20th anniversary of independence for this beautiful country that we’re lucky to call home. From the mountains to the coast, and here at Lake Skadar, there is so much to see and love.

It's impossible not to think about how things have changed in that time. Our lake base Villa Miela was a ruin back in 2006, and there were only a few tourists around. Now, while the natural beauty of the national park remains the same, the streets of Virpazar are vibrant from spring to autumn, filled with people celebrating nature, which is always such a special thing to see.
