Kayaking across Lake Skadar, helping wild tortoises cross the road, exploring hidden corners, swimming and jumping, laughing, making new friends, playing some games and just having an amazing time. That's how last week's school break went down on our active family retreat at . 🌿☀️

Happy 20th birthday Montenegro! 🇲🇪

Today marks the 20th anniversary of independence for this beautiful country that we’re lucky to call home. From the mountains to the coast, and here at Lake Skadar, there is so much to see and love.

It's impossible not to think about how things have changed in that time. Our lake base Villa Miela was a ruin back in 2006, and there were only a few tourists around. Now, while the natural beauty of the national park remains the same, the streets of Virpazar are vibrant from spring to autumn, filled with people celebrating nature, which is always such a special thing to see.

Our May yoga retreat is underway at last...🧘‍♀️🌿✨

It's all about slowing things down through restorative morning workshops with Fiona on the deck, birdsong in the background, and breakfast waiting when the mats roll up.

But our retreats are about so much more than working on everyone's asanas. “A fantastic trip” — and it shows why Montenegro deserves a place on every birder’s bucket list. 🐦

Our latest birdwatching holiday just wrapped up with 94 species recorded (scroll for the full list).

From Dalmatian Pelicans on Lake Skadar to flamingos and waders, and high mountain birding in Durmitor National Park, such variety in habitats delivered something new every day.

Standout sightings included Alpine Chough (in a spectacular flock), Black Woodpecker, Rock Partridge, Ferruginous Duck, Bee-eaters and Hoopoes.

Even a highly experienced birder in our group added new species to his life list — all here in tiny Montenegro. Expertly guided by our local expert naturalist, Mihailo. 🦅

Croatia, but cheaper? This BBC headline caught a lot of attention this week, and we're really happy to see Montenegro winning more hearts 💛

But… no, this isn’t Croatia. And whether it’s “cheaper” really depends on where you go, and who you book with (hint: our adventure holidays are better value than what's quoted in the article — and consistently 5⭐️).

So why isn’t Montenegro just a cheaper Croatia, and in many ways, better for it?

🏔️ First: it's the landscape. Swap Croatia’s long coastline and islands for a country dominated by mountains, canyons, rivers and lakes. Montenegro isn't just a beach break; it's one big playground for outdoor adventure lovers.

🧭 Second: the culture and customs. While Croatia leans west, Montenegro has a more eastern feel, shaped by centuries under the Ottoman Empire.
