David Redfern sent us these fabulous photos of the wild boars and their piglets on Scarba a few weeks ago!
Wild boar are wild members of the pig family that once lived across the UK but disappeared around the 1200s because of hunting and the loss of forests. The wild boar now found in Scotland are believed to come from animals that escaped from farms or private collections, as well as some that were released illegally.
They have thick, bristly fur that can be black, brown, or dark grey, while young piglets are brown with pale stripes along their bodies.

Adult males grow sharp tusks up to 12cm long and can weigh as much as 200kg.

Wild boar are usually active at night and eat a wide range of foods, mostly plants.

As they dig through the ground looking for food, they help nature by spreading seeds, creating space for new plants to grow, and uncovering insects for birds to eat. They have an excellent sense of smell and hearing, although their eyesight is poor.
Males often live alone, while females and their young live together in groups called sounders.
