On our drive back from Lake Annecy to Roscoff, we added an overnight in Angers mainly as a practical stop – although we did know there was a medieval castle there, which caught my husband’s interest and nudged it onto the route.
What we didn’t expect was how much we’d like the city itself: relaxed, safe and beautifully kept, with a youthful buzz, plenty of great restaurants, an impressive cathedral and colourful fountains, as well as that striking castle. Far more atmosphere and interest than you’d usually expect from a stop to break the journey.
Over dinner, a lady at the next table even offered me some of her w**e so I could try a local bottle – the sort of small, kind gesture that makes a place stay with you. It’s one of those stops we left thinking: we really should have stayed longer.
