For many, it's not just the places visited, but the conversations shared along the way.

At 11:15am on 3 September 1939, Neville Chamberlain addressed the nation by radio: Great Britain was officially at war.

Chamberlain's announcement followed Germany's invasion of Poland two days earlier and its refusal to withdraw before the deadline set in the British ultimatum.

Just hours later, the SS Athenia became the first civilian ship casualty of the war.

Within a single day, the abstract became real. Air raid sirens sounded across London within minutes of the broadcast. It was a false alarm, but no less unsettling for those who heard it. Evacuation trains were already carrying children away from Britain's cities. The country that had hoped, right until the last, to avoid this moment now found that it had arrived.

On this day in 1944, Paris was liberated after more than four years of German occupation.

The story of the Liberation is one of courage, resilience and resistance, shaped by the actions of ordinary citizens, members of the French Resistance, Allied forces and countless individuals who risked everything in the fight against N**i rule.

After the German garrison's surrender on 25 August, the following day saw jubilant crowds fill the streets as General Charles de Gaulle led a triumphal march through Paris.

These events left their mark across the city and throughout France. Today, we continue to explore and remember those stories on tours such as Wartime Paris: Spies, Resistance and the Holocaust and France Under the Jackboot – SOE, SAS & the French Resistance.
