On this day in 1940, Operation Dynamo entered its first full day, as the remarkable evacuation of over 338,000 Allied troops from Dunkirk – many of them British – began in earnest.

As France fell to advancing German forces, the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), alongside thousands of French and Belgian troops, was surrounded. Without a successful evacuation, Britain risked losing the core of its trained, battle-ready army, which would have left the UK dangerously exposed.

The success of the operation became a powerful morale boost for the British public, many of whom saw their countrymen send privately owned boats across the Channel to help bring the troops home.

Today, the story of Dunkirk can still be felt in the landscape itself, from the beaches to the museum dedicated exclusively to this fascinating chapter.
