Spring on the Karnali is pretty special.

Warm days, quiet beaches, beautiful camps and one of the finest wilderness rivers in Nepal.

It’s a proper river journey rather than just a series of rapids, although there are plenty of those too.

Ten days on the water gives you time to settle into river life properly, and it’s also one of the trips I really like for adventurous families.

Phones disappear. Campfires appear. Everyone slows down a bit.

Not a bad trade.

Croatia is a different kind of Water By Nature adventure.

No helmets. No wetsuits. No rapids.

Instead: swim stops, little harbours, beautiful old towns, long lunches and sailing between islands with only a handful of people onboard.

We keep the groups small. Just 8 guests, which means we can avoid the big marinas when we want to and make the trip feel much more relaxed.

It’s one of those holidays where you very quickly lose track of what day it is.

Which is probably a good sign.

The Zambezi never really gets old.

Big water, warm weather, incredible scenery and some of the best whitewater anywhere in the world.

It’s a river that keeps you concentrating, keeps you laughing and occasionally reminds you very quickly who’s in charge.

We’ve been running trips here for years, and it’s still one of those places I’m always excited to get back to.

If you’ve ever wanted to raft one of the world’s great rivers, this is a pretty good place to start.

Some rivers have one big rapid everyone talks about.

The Magpie has quite a few of them.

This is one of my favourite things about the river. Long stretches of beautiful wilderness, then suddenly you’re back into proper whitewater again.

Floatplane in, seven days on the river, great camps, big scenery and some cracking rapids along the way.

Canada really does adventure really well.

What’s it actually like to raft the Landsborough?

First, you fly in by helicopter.

That gives you a fairly good idea of what’s coming.

The Landsborough sits deep in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, surrounded by huge mountains, glaciers and native forest. Once the helicopter disappears, you really do feel like you’re out there.

The rafting itself is great fun with enough whitewater to keep everyone very interested, but for me the Landsborough has always been about the whole place.

Clear water. Huge mountains. Camp beside the river. Wake up, put the coffee on and realise there isn’t a road anywhere near you.

It’s one of those rivers that reminds you why multi-day rafting is so special.

And yes, the helicopter ride in is pretty spectacular too.

A little secret about French Polynesia: September might just be my favourite time to be there.

The main holiday season is easing off, the islands feel a little quieter and, rather wonderfully, the humpback whales are around.

Every year they migrate into the warm waters of French Polynesia to mate, give birth and raise their calves.

Imagine spending the day sailing between Raiatea, Taha’a and Bora Bora, dropping anchor somewhere ridiculously beautiful… and spotting a whale in the distance.

That’s pretty difficult to beat.

If you’re someone who prefers travelling when things are a little quieter, early September is a very lovely time to go.

There are rivers where the whitewater is the whole story. The Magpie isn’t one of them.

You fly into the wilderness by floatplane.

There are no roads following you down the valley. No cafés around the corner. No easy way out.

Just forest, river, granite, waterfalls and some seriously good whitewater.

The Magpie has proper Class IV rapids, but one of the things I love about it is the balance. Big fun on the river, then beautiful camps, good food and that wonderful feeling of being somewhere properly remote.

It’s Canada at its best.

And arriving by floatplane isn’t a bad way to start a rafting trip either.

Meet Julio.

One of the things I love about this job is working with guides who don’t just know one river or one country. They know expedition life.

Julio has worked with us in Peru, on the Zambezi and in Morocco, and he’s likely to be leading our Cotahuasi trips next season.

That kind of experience matters.

Every river is different. Different water, different camps, different logistics, different people. But the best guides know how to read a group, keep everyone safe, make the hard days fun and somehow still have plenty of energy left when everyone else is ready for bed.

Julio is very much one of those people.

If you’re joining us in Peru next year, there’s a very good chance you’ll get to know him rather well.

And that’s a good thing.
