This Easter morning, we attended the Dawn Service on North Sands — something we do each year, and it never loses its meaning. There’s something incredibly peaceful and moving about gathering in the early light to reflect and celebrate.

This morning’s service also included three baptisms (with no wetsuits!) and was followed by complimentary coffee and croissants from The Winking Prawn.

One of the people being baptised had travelled from Leicester, setting off at midnight, to be baptised in the sea. It was her first time visiting Salcombe.

There is also a Family Service at Holy Trinity Church in Salcombe at 10am this morning.

Happy Easter Everyone!

You may have noticed that our beloved Palm Tree at No. 9 has been struggling a little recently.

After taking advice from Overbecks’ Head Gardener (thank you!), we began carefully removing ivy and trimming dead branches to try to preserve it. But as we worked, locals passing by grew understandably concerned — “That tree has been here over a hundred years! This was known as Palm Tree Corner! You mustn’t cut it down!” We would firstly like to reassure everyone: we’re not cutting it down — we’re trying very hard to save it — because it means a lot to us and our community.

That’s why on this Palm Sunday we’d like to share a special story which was told to us by an elderly gentleman when we first bought the cottage in 1985.

He told us that when he was a boy, one Palm Sunday all the children who attended church were given palm saplings — not crosses — and he planted his right here in what’s now our garden. That’s how it became known as Palm Tree Corner and how it became a living part of Salcombe’s history - quite literally rooted in our community!

We’d love to know more about this story - especially who the boy was and whether the other palm saplings are still here in Salcombe.
