From UK, to Paris, Paris to Vietnam, then from Cambodia, to Bangkok, and now just arrived by air to Koh Samui, a total of 5 flights to date, all gone swimmingly well, with enough time in between to allow for errors/delays.

This is the type of tailor made holiday that I adore doing, and dare I say it, I do it well!

I take as much care over your holiday as I do my own, more really as I value the planning and anticipation a wonderful holiday brings.

So, give me a shout if you fancy me planning a major holiday for you, or equally, I can take a TUI, Jet2 or EasyJet holiday off the shelf for you, your call, I just take care of the details so all you need think about is what to pack!

Good job I don’t help you with that actually, as I’ve brought enough clothes for a 6 month stay 😳.

Last port of call, a beautiful authentic, Thai style villa, just off the beach, beach pics to follow tomorrow as it was too dark when we arrived, but from what I can see, it looks stunning!

Lots of time, planning and attention to detail goes into the same holidays I plan for my customers as I do for myself.

Techno Airport Cambodia, 2 years old, stunning, quiet and a total joy.

Bangkok Airport Thailand, many years old, busy, chaotic, and a brilliant people watching spot - just as well as we will be here 5 times longer than the actual flight to Koh Samui! 😂✈️🧑‍✈️

Cambodia has well and truly stolen my heart on this next leg of my Avalon Saigon Mekong River journey.

From the children running to the riverbank shouting “hello!”, to chatting in English with young students in a village school and watching silver crafted by hand using centuries-old techniques, every day has been humbling and unforgettable.

We have travelled by Cyclo to the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh, by Tuk Tuk to the bustling markets and even by ox cart to the silver village.

Add in those fiery Mekong sunsets and the glittering Phnom Penh skyline at night, and this chapter has been pure magic.

If you saw my first post from Vietnam, this is the perfect continuation of that Mekong story.

And it is not over yet: we might have finished on the Mekong River but our next stop is 10 days in a beach villa in Koh Samui, Thailand… stay tuned!

Day 5 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia

We have two choices of excursions today:

A Dark History or Market Dynamics

CLASSIC This morning, a Guided Visit of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and one of the Killing Fields offers a glimpse into the atrocities inflicted on the Cambodian people by the Khmer Rouge regime, including the sacred tomb storing some of the skulls of over one million slaughtered Cambodians.

OR:DISCOVERY Visit the lively Central Market by tuk-tuk to see its unique Art Deco design. After lunch, depart Phnom Penh and enjoy some time at leisure on the ship.

This one is a hard choice, you feel you should pay your respects and acknowledge the atrocities performed on these poor people, but equally, we are on holiday and know this will be hard to witness.

What would you do?

In Cambodia, on the Avalon Saigon, we were visited this evening by the children of a local orphanage, to perform music and dance, run by a local charity.

So heart warming, ranging from their own local dance to Michael Jackson 😂 - great to see and also to support their community.

After months of talking about it, I’ve finally done it: I’m sailing along the Mekong on the beautiful Avalon Saigon… and I may never come home.
We’re only 18 passengers on board but there are 24 members of staff looking after us. That’s right: there are more of them than us. If I so much as glance in the vague direction of a coffee cup, someone appears with a fresh brew and a smile. I am starting to worry that I may forget how to pour my own water by the end of this trip.
The star of the show so far is our Cruise Director, Khanh. He somehow manages to be everywhere at once: quietly organising everything behind the scenes, sharing fascinating stories about life along the Mekong, and still finding time to check in with each of us personally. Nothing is too much trouble, and everything is done with real warmth and humour. You feel less like a guest on a ship and more like a very spoiled friend.
And then there is the food. If you love fresh, fragrant Vietnamese flavours, this is heaven afloat. From delicate spring rolls to beautifully spiced curries, every meal feels like something you’d happily pay good money for ashore. Portions are generous, presentation is stunning, and the staff remember exactly what you like. My only exercise at this point is walking from my cabin to the restaurant and back again, but it feels like a fair trade.
Life on board has slipped into a very pleasant routine: gentle cruising past lush riverbanks, glimpses of local life on the water, then back to being waited on hand and foot. It is relaxed, intimate and very personal, which is exactly what I love about this style of river cruising.
Vietnam has already stolen a piece of my heart, and I’ll be sharing more about my time here separately. For now, I’m going to sit back, enjoy another delicious meal I definitely didn’t have to cook, and watch the Mekong drift by.
Next stop: Phnom Penh, Cambodia… stay tuned.
