Based in the heart of Skelmersdale, West Lancashire College offers students a variety of courses to assist them in achieving their future career. West Lancashire College is a small, community based college, forming part of the NCG Group which is a large and successful national provider of further and higher education and apprenticeship training. Our college is home to around 3,500 students: made up of young people and adults of all abilities and backgrounds. West Lancashire College is at the heart of the local community, recognised for the work we do in supporting social mobility through a skills and careers focused curriculum that connects individuals to opportunities and enables people to fulfil their potential throughout their lives. Developed in 2020 and launched in 2021, our strategy is aligned to NCG’s Strategy to 2030 and sets out our role in the region to support our students, communities and our partners.

As part of , we are delighted to bring you Nihmat's story 😊

Nihmat, a current ESOL student of ours, has worked in the media for over 20 years, focusing on reporting, writing, documentary-making, as well as radio and TV. With the ability to speak Kurdish, Persian and German, he is now working on improving his English with us, and we are thrilled by his progress.

He said, "Journalism and language learning are alike in one way: you have to listen, ask questions and be brave enough to make mistakes. With better English, I want to tell my stories to more people. Every new language is a new door to people's stories."

Our alumni T Level Health students have progressed on to some truly incredible destinations, including full-time employment and university! 😃

Katie, a former Burscough Priory Academy pupil, will be starting her role as a Police Control Room Operator with Lancashire Police. Bobbie-Jo, a former pupil of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic High School Skelmersdale, is settling in brilliantly at Edge Hill University, where she is studying Nursing (Adult) BSc (Hons). Chloe, another former pupil of Our Lady's, has begun her first full-time role in the industry as an ICC Call Handler with North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust!

When asked about their time on the course, our alumni students shared: "The T Level course provided us all with real-life exposure, while offering a unique blend of high-level academic theory and essential practical experience."

Meet Chloe, a former Deyes High School pupil, who is thriving on our Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing (Engineering) T Level course 🔩

When asked about her T Level studies, Chloe said, "I've enjoyed learning CAD drawing, as it's really helped me to develop my design and technical skills. Creating detailed drawings and seeing ideas come to life has given me a better understanding of industry practices and how designs are developed professionally. My tutors have been very supportive throughout the course, providing all the information and guidance I need for both my exams and industry placement. Their support has helped me feel prepared, confident and ready to succeed in both the classroom and the workplace. After completing my course, I hope to secure an apprenticeship in the industry, allowing me to continue developing my skills and gain further hands-on experience."

Community engagement is at the heart of what we do at West Lancashire College, and we were delighted to return to St John's Catholic Primary School today as part of our Give A Day initiative ☺️

Our Principal, Christian, was joined by Guy Walker from Dovetail Slate and Derry Green from The Secret Garden Glamping to help tidy the hedge outside the school, enhancing the environment for pupils, staff and visitors.

Clare Sweeney-Williams, Head Teacher of St John's Primary School said, "a huge thank you to West Lancashire College for including St John’s in their 'Give a Day' initiative and for their hard work supporting improvements to our school grounds. They have inspired our pupils to get involved in next year’s initiative, putting their faith into action and making a positive difference in their own community."

Working together on the project showcased inspirational leadership in action, highlighting the dedication of everyone involved to giving back to the local community.

Sophie, a current Early Years Educator (Education and Childcare) T Level student and an alumni pupil of Burscough Priory Academy has developed her greater self-belief and determination throughout her course! 🤩

When asked about her T Level studies, Sophie said, "I've wanted to become a teacher since Year 4 and studying the T Level has given me the knowledge, skills and experience I need to work towards my goal. I've gained such valuable knowledge of key educational theorists, as well as practical skills such as first aid training, as well as health and safety training. My industry placement at Town Green Primary School has been a great experience - I've supported small phonics groups, carried out phonics assessments, lead maths groups and helped them with their writing. After my T Level course, I am aiming to study Primary Education with QTS (5-11) PGCE at Edge Hill University."
