A glorious day at Suvla with the The Western Front Association tour, guiding alongside Gary Sheffield we began at Lala Baba and the 6 Yorkshires attack through the eyes and words of Ralph Peel who diary has just been discovered after all these years. As well as the story of a single shell landing among the Walthamstow men of the 7/Essex courtesy of East London Branch mamber Chris Hunt.

Then onto Hill 10 and Azmak, following the 1/5 Norfolks and the fate of my Great Uncle George Stanley Miller.

After lunch it was Scimitar & W Hills, the key ground to the sector and the fighting of 21 August being the largest battle of the campaign. An encounter with spikey local wildlife in Green Hill CWGC before ending at the Anzac Commemorative site before tomorrows study of the Anzac Sector. Quite a day!

Small personal tours are so rewarding, a couple of days in the company of the lovely Moya Greene and her husband Roger following in the footsteps of her grandfather Augustine Greene, 1/Newfoundland Regiment who was wounded as Masnieres on the 21 November 1917 ending his war. Despite a serious back injury, he was employed as a lighthouse keeper in Newfoundland, with accomodation for his family in recognition of his war service.

This was the first family back to re-discover his war over a century on.

Thankful to have known, worked, drunk and laughed with Gordon Sahib. A robust, rebellious and no nonsense man who did so much in his life. Yesterday's service was incredibly powerful and the family were of course inspirational. We all need to , with Gurkha Pipers and a rousing National Anthem to end, of course, we say farewell mon ami.
